  • 1852 - First intercollegiate rowing race in USA, Harvard beats Yale by four lengths.
  • 1881 - US Nation Lawn Tennis Association removes "Nation" from name.
  • 1914 - New York Yankees' catcher Nunamaker throws out three would-be stealers in one inning.
  • 1921 - Due to a technicality, eight Chicago White Sox players accused in the Black Sox scandal are acquited, however commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis throws them out of baseball.
  • 1928 - Ray Barbuti saves US team from defeat in Amsterdam Olympics track events by winning 400m (47.8 seconds).
  • 1930 - Second time in 1930, Chuck Klein of Philadelphia Phillies hits in 26 straight games.
  • 1933 - New York Yankees are shut out for first time after 308 games.
  • 1936 - American Jesse Owens wins Olympic 100m dash in 10.3 seconds.
  • 1949 - Basketball Association of America and National Basketball League merge to form the National Basketball Association.
  • 1952 - Games of the XV Olympiad close in Helsinki, Finland.
  • 1955 - Automobile Association of America ends support of auto racing.
  • 1956 - Willie Williams of the US sets 100 metre dash record at 10.1 seconds.
  • 1959 - American League beats National League 5-3 in 27th All Star Game (Dodger Stadium).
  • 1962 - New York Mets' Frank Thomas hits his 6th home run in three games.
  • 1969 - Cincinnati Reds beats Philadelphia Phillies 19-17.
  • 1970 - Four-day NFL strike ends.
  • 1975 - Louisiana Superdome is dedicated. The stadium cost $175 million to build.
  • 1979 - Fastest jai-alai shot (188 mph), Jose Arieto at Newport Jai Alai, Rhode Island.
  • 1980 - Duke Snider and Al Kaline enter baseball's Hall of Fame.
  • 1982 - Clyde King replaces Gene Michaels as New York Yankees' manager.
  • 1985 - "Nihilator" sets harness pacing mile (1:49.6) in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
  • 1987 - Chicago Bears beat Dallas Cowboys 17-6 in London, England (NFL expo).
  • 1989 - 5th jockey to win 6,000 races (Jorge Valesquez).
  • 1989 - Cincinnati Reds send record 20 men to bat with a record 16 hits in one inning as they score 14 runs in the first inning.
  • 1989 - Rickey Henderson sets American League mark of 50 steals in nine seasons.
  • 1990 - For the third time in 1990 a no-hitter is broken up with two outs in the 8th inning. Doug Drabek of Pittsburgh Pirates still beats Philadelphia Phillies 11-0.
  • 1990 - New York Yankees' player Kevin Mass sets record with 10th home run in first 72 at bats.
  • 1991 - Pan Am games open in Havana, Cuba.
  • 2022 - At Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Dodgers beats San Francisco Giants by score 3-0.
  • 2022 - At Petco Park in San Diego, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Diego Padres beats Colorado Rockies by score 9-1.
  • 2022 - At Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Oakland Athletics beats Los Angeles Angels by score 3-1.
  • 2022 - At PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Pittsburgh Pirates beats Milwaukee Brewers by score 8-7.
