  • 1954 - At the British Empire Games in Vancouver, British Columbia, a one-mile race is held between England's Roger Bannister and Australia's John Landy. Near the end, Landy in the lead looks for Bannister over his left shoulder, as Bannister passes Landy past his right shoulder, winning the race with a time of 3:58.8.
  • 1972 - Baseball Hall of Fame inducts Yogi Berra, Sandy Koufax, Lefty Gomez, and Early Wynn.
  • 1983 - First World Track and Field Championships.
  • 1983 - Grete Waitz of Norway wins first all-women Marathon (Helsinki, Finland).
  • 1984 - Japan beats US for Olympic gold medal in baseball.
  • 1984 - Jim Deshales becomes 1,000th playing New York Yankees.
  • 1985 - Major League Baseball players end their two-day mide-season strike. A five-year agreement between the union and owners is concluded.
  • 1987 - Bill Mazeroski's uniform jersey #9 is officially retired from active service by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
  • 1988 - A record five sacrifice flies are hit by the Seattle Mariners (D. Coles, A. Davis, J. Presley, J. Buhner, and R. Quinones) in a 12-7 victory over the Oakland Athletics.
  • 1990 - New York Yankees' player Kevin Mass sets record with 12th home run in first 92 at bats and becomes 21st to hit a ball into third deck of Seattle's Kingdome.
  • 1991 - US sets 400m relay record at 37.67 seconds.
  • 2001 - Black Betsy, Shoeless Joe Jackson's 40-ounce warped hickory bat, is won in a 10-day eBay auction. The $577,610 price tag is believed to be the largest amount ever paid for a baseball bat.
  • 2007 - At AT&T Park in San Francisco, California, San Francisco Giants' player Barry Bonds surpasses Hank Aaron as the all-time home run leader with his 756th home run. During the 10-minute celebration following the historic homer, a video message is played on the scoreboard in which Aaron congratulates the left fielder for breaking the 33-year old record.
  • 2016 - At the Road America raceway in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, USA, the Continental Tire Road Race Showcase race is held, round 9 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 1st in Prototype class and 1st overall is the Whelen Engineering Racing #31 Corvette DP driven by Dane Cameron and Eric Curran.
    • Finishing 1st in Prototype Challenge class and 7th overall is the PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports driven by Tom Kimber-Smith and Robert Alon.
    • Finishing 1st in GT Le Mans class and 13th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C7.R driven by Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin.
    • Finishing 1st in GT Daytona class and 21st overall is the Riley Motorsports #33 Dodge Viper GT3-R driven by Jeroen Bleekemolen and Ben Keating.

  • 2022 - At Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Dodgers beats San Diego Padres by score 4-0.
  • 2022 - At Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Colorado Rockies beats Arizona Diamondbacks by score 6-4.
  • 2022 - At Citi Field in New York City, New York, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: New York Mets beats Atlanta Braves by score 5-2.
  • 2022 - At T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Seattle Mariners beats Los Angeles Angels by score 6-3.
  • 2022 - At RingCentral Coliseum, Oakland, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Francisco Giants beats Oakland Athletics by score 6-4.
  • 2022 - At Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Chicago White Sox beats Texas Rangers by score 8-2.
  • 2022 - At Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Miami Marlins beats Chicago Cubs by score 3-0.
  • 2022 - At Busch Stadium in Saint Louis, Missouri, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Saint Louis Cardinals beats New York Yankees by score 12-9.
  • 2022 - At Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Toronto Blue Jays beats Minnesota Twins by score 3-2.
  • 2022 - At American Family Field in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Cininnati Reds beats Milwaukee Brewers by score 4-2.
