  • 1906 - Chicago Cubs' pitcher Jack Taylor ends a string of completing 202 games (187 complete, 15 relief) by the Brooklyn Dodgers in the third inning.
  • 1910 - Brooklyn Dodgers and Pittsburgh Pirates play to 8-8 tie, both have 38 at bats, 13 hits, 12 assists, two errors, five strikeouts, three walks, 1 passed ball, and 1 hit by pitch.
  • 1917 - Philadelphia Phillies steal five bases in an inning against the Boston Braves.
  • 1919 - Man O' War's only defeat (Upset wins at Saratoga).
  • 1928 - Soviet Union's Spartacan Games begin.
  • 1932 - New York Yankees' pitcher Red Ruffing homers and wins game 1-0 in 10 tying the feat of Washington Senators' Tom Hughes who also won 1-0 in 10 in 1906.
  • 1939 - New York Yankees set American League shutout margin with 21-0 victory over Philadelphia Athletics.
  • 1948 - Satchel Paige at age 42 pitches his first major league complete game.
  • 1963 - Warren Spahn sets left-hander strike out mark at 2,382.
  • 1969 - Baltimore Orioles' player Jim Palmer no-hits Oakland Athletics, 8-0.
  • 1969 - Temporary baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn is formally appointed.
  • 1978 - New York Yankees score five runs in top of 7th, but rain causes game to be halted and thus score goes back to previous inning, Baltimore Orioles wins 3-0.
  • 1979 - Lou Brock gets his 3,000th career hit.
  • 1980 - Tatyana Kazankina of USSR sets 1.5k woman's record (3:52.47) in USSR.
  • 1988 - Boston Red Sox win American League record 24 straight home games.
  • 1988 - Ronald J Dossenbach sets world record for pedaling across Canada from Vancouver, British Columbia to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 13 days, 15 hours, 4 min.
  • 1988 - US beats Jamaica 5-1, in second round of 1990 world soccer cup.
  • 1997 - In Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Cruzeiro wins Sporting Cristal of Peru by 1-0 and are Copa Libertadores de América champions by second time.
  • 1999 - Steffi Graf announces her retirement from tennis after a 17 year career in which she won 107 career titles including 22 Grand Slams.
  • 2004 - (to August 29) The Games of the XXVIII Olympiad are held in Athens, Greece.
  • 2008 - At the Beijing Olympics, American swimmer Michael Phelps wins his 10th and 11th career gold medals, in men's 200-metre butterfly and 4x200 freestyle relay in world record 6:58.56). Phelps is now the record holder of most career Olympic gold medals.
  • 2008 - At the Beijing Olympics, Stephanie Rice of Australia wins gold in the women's 200-metre individual medley in world record 2:08.45.
  • 2008 - At the Beijing Olympics, Federica Pellegrini of Italy wins gold in the women's 200-metre freestyle in world record 1:54.82.
  • 2022 - At Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Angels beats Minnesota Twins by score 5-3.
  • 2022 - At Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Francisco Giants beats Pittsburgh Pirates by score 2-0.
  • 2022 - At Coors Field in Denver, Colorado, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Arizona Diamondbacks beats Colorado Rockies by score 6-0.
