  • 1920 - First US woman to win in Olympics (Ethelda Bleibtrey).
  • 1921 - New York Yankees' pitcher Harry Harper hits three batters in an inning, tying record.
  • 1922 - Chicago Cubs beat Philadelphia Phillies 26-23 in highest scoring major-league baseball game.
  • 1924 - Washington Senators' Walter Johnson second no-hitter beats Saint Louis Browns, 2-0 in 7 innings.
  • 1925 - Helen Willis wins her third straight US Lawn Tennis Open.
  • 1936 - Three Boston Braves' players hit twice in an inning getting two hits each.
  • 1946 - Ben Hogan wins the PGA championship.
  • 1950 - Sugar Ray Robinson knocks out Jose Basora to win middleweight boxing title.
  • 1952 - Detroit Tigers' Virgil Trucks second no-hitter of year, beats New York Yankees, 1-0.
  • 1960 - (to September 11) The Games of the XVII Olympiad are held in Rome, Italy.
  • 1960 - AFL begins placing players' names on back of their jerseys.
  • 1967 - Minnesota Twins' Dean Chance second no-hitter of month beats Cleveland Indians, 2-1.
  • 1968 - New York Yankees' outfield Rocky Colavito pitches 2 2/3 innings and beats the Detroit Tigers 6-5; he played right field in the second game and hit a home run.
  • 1969 - Detriot Lions beat Boston Patriots 22-9 in Montréal (NFL expo).
  • 1974 - Los Angeles Aztecs defeat Miami Toros to win NASL cup.
  • 1976 - New York Yankees beat Minnesota Twins 5-4 in 19 innings.
  • 1979 - California Angels trounce Toronto Blue Jays, 24-2.
  • 1983 - Triple A baseball's Louisville breaks one million fan mark.
  • 1985 - New York Mets' Dwight Goodin becomes youngest pitcher to win 20 games, at age 20 years 9 months 9 days).
  • 1986 - At Tiger Stadium, Oakland Athletics' rookie Mark McGwire hits his first major league home run off of Walt Terrell.
  • 1990 - Li Hui Rong of China sets the triple jump women's record (47 feet 8.5 inches).
  • 1991 - Carl Lewis runs 100m in 9.86 seconds.
  • 2005 - Saint Louis Cardinals' pitcher Tony LaRussa wins his 2,195th career game, moving into third place in all-time major league history.
  • 2019 - At the Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Virginia, USA, the Michelin GT Challenge at VIR race is held, round 10 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 1st in GT Le Mans class and 1st overall is the Porsche GT Team #911 Porsche 911 RSR driven by Nick Tandy and Patrick Pilet.
    • Finishing 1st in GT Daytona class and 9th overall is the Mercedes AMG Team Riley Motorsports #33 Mercedes AMG GT3 driven by Jeroen Bleekemolen and Ben Keating.

  • 2022 - At NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, USA, National Football League pre-season game: Houston Texans beats San Francisco 49ers by score 17-0.
  • 2022 - At Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, USA, National Football League pre-season game: Kansas City Chiefs beats Green Bay Packers by score 17-10.
  • 2022 - At RingCentral Coliseum, Oakland, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: New York Yankees beats Oakland Athletics by score 13-4.
  • 2022 - At Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Houston Astros beats Minnesota Twins by score 6-3.
  • 2022 - At Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Toronto Blue Jays beats Boston Red Sox by score 6-5.
