  • 1938 - Only time brothers hit back-to-back home runs (Lloyd and Paul Waner, Pittsburgh Pirates).
  • 1940 - Third American Football League plays first game (Milwaukee 14, Columbus 2).
  • 1940 - Chicago Tribune sponsors Ted Lyons Day (Chicago White Sox pitcher).
  • 1946 - Brooklyn Dodgers beat Chicago Cubs 2-0 in five innings, games called because of gnats.
  • 1947 - New York Yankees clinch pennant #15.
  • 1950 - Longest game in Philadelphia's Shribe Park, Philadelphia Phillies beat Cincinnati Reds 8-7 in 19 innings.
  • 1950 - New York Yankees' player Johnny Mize hits three homers (sixth time he has done that).
  • 1953 - Boxing's NBA adopts 10-point-must-scoring-system (10 points to round winner).
  • 1957 - San Francisco Seals (Pacific Coast League) play their last game.
  • 1962 - Australia's first entry in America's Cup yacht race (US wins).
  • 1962 - Kansas City Athletics' Bill Fischer sets record of 69 1/3 innings without a walk.
  • 1969 - Saint Louis Cardinals' pitcher Steve Carlton strikes out nineteen batters of the New York Mets, establishing a new a new major league mark for strikeouts in a single game.
  • 1978 - Muhammad Ali beats WBA heavyweight champion Leon Spinks.
  • 1978 - New York Yankees beat Boston Red Sox 4-0, Guidry wins number 22, Yankees lead 2.5 games.
  • 1979 - Boston Red Sox player Bob Watson is first to hit for the cycle in American League and National League (Houston Astros).
  • 1985 - European team beats US team for golf's Ryders Cup (first since 1957).
  • 1988 - Lillehammer, Norway upsets Anchorage, Alaska to host 1994 Winter Olympics.
  • 1991 - South Dakota State freshman Marshall Faulk sets NCAA rushing record of 386 yards.
  • 2000 - (to October 1) The Games of the XXVII Olympiad are held in Sydney, Australia.
  • 2003 - Barry Bonds walks for the 2,063rd time in his career, passing Babe Ruth on the all-time walks list to become number two on the list.
  • 2019 - At the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California, USA, the Monterey SportsCar Championship race is held, round 11 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 1st in DPi class and 1st overall is the ACURA TEAM PENSKE #6 Acura DPi driven by Juan Pablo Montoya and Dane Cameron.
    • Finishing 1st in LMP2 class and 10th overall is the PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports #52 ORECA LMP2 driven by Matt McMurry and Dalton Kellett.
    • Finishing 1st in GT Le Mans class and 12th overall is the Ford Chip Ganassi Racing #66 Ford GT driven by Joey Hand and Dirk Mueller.
    • Finishing 1st in GT Daytona class and 20th overall is the Paul Miller Racing #48 Lamborghini Huracan GT3 driven by Bryan Sellers and Corey Lewis.

  • 2022 - At Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, USA, National Football League regular season game: Kansas City Chiefs beats Los Angeles Chargers by score 27-24.
  • 2022 - At Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Arizona Diamondbacks beats San Diego Padres by score 4-0.
