  • 1928 - Pitcher Ray Boggs hits three batters in one inning.
  • 1937 - First NFL game in Washington, DC; Washington Redskins beat New York Giants 13-3.
  • 1950 - San Francisco 49ers (formerly AAFC) play first NFL game, lose 21-17.
  • 1954 - Heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano knocks out Ezzard Charles in eight rounds.
  • 1956 - New York Yankees clinch pennant #22 on Mickey Mantle's 50th homer of the year.
  • 1961 - Minnesota Vikings' first NFL game (beat Chicago Bears 37-13).
  • 1964 - Mickey Mantle gets hits number 1999, 2000 and 2001.
  • 1967 - New Orleans Saints' first NFL game, they lose to Los Angeles Rams 27-13.
  • 1968 - Gaylord Perry (San Francisco Giants) no-hits Saint Louis Cardinals, 1-0.
  • 1974 - Courageous (US) beats Southern Cross (Australia) in 23rd America's Cup.
  • 1977 - Dave Kingman hits his first New York Yankees' homer, Reggie Jackson hits two more.
  • 1982 - New Jersey Devils' first exhibition game, beating the Washington Capitals 3-1 in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
  • 1984 - On the seventeenth anniversary of his first major league home-run, Reggie Jackson hits his 500th career home run.
  • 1984 - New York Mets' Dwight Goodin becomes second to strikeout 32 over two consecutive games.
  • 1986 - Marina Stepanova of USSR sets the 400m hurdle woman's record (52.94).
  • 1988 - Jeff Reardon becomes first to record 40 or more saves in both American League and National League.

  • 1990 - The Toronto Blue Jays set a major league single-season attendance record of 49,902.

    • Finishing 1st in Prototype Challenge class and 5th overall is the Starworks Motorsport #8 ORECA FLM09 driven by Renger VanDer Zande and Alex Popow.
    • Finishing 1st in GT Le Mans class and 10th overall is the Porsche North America #912 Porsche 911 RSR driven by Earl Bamber and Fred Makowiecki.
    • Finishing 1st in GT Daytona class and 22nd overall is the Turner Motorsport #96 BMW M6 GT3 driven by Jens Klingmann and Bret Curtis.
