  • 1956 - At the NARTB convention in Chicago, Illinois, Ampex Corporation of Redwood City, California, demonstrates the first commercial magnetic tape recorder for sound and picture. Price of a machine: $75,000.
  • 1964 - 36th Academy Awards - Tom Jones, Sidney Poitier, and Patricia Neal win.
  • 1965 - NBC airs "The Best on Record", the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences presentation of the 7th Annual Grammy Awards. Some winners:
  • Record of the Year: Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto for "The Girl From Ipanema";
  • Best Instrumental Composition (other than jazz): Henry Mancini for "The Pink Panther Theme";

  • Best Folk Recording: Gale Garnett for "We'll Sing In The Sunshine";
  • Best Country and Western Single: Roger Miller for "Dang Me".

    • 1967 - ABC-TV airs the final Where the Action Is TV show.
    • 1994 - Ted Turner launches the "Turner Classic Movies" cable TV channel in the US.
    • 1997 - VH1 debuts TV show Classic Albums, with host Ringo Starr.
