- 1997 - The second largest cash robbery in U.S. history ($17.3 million, mostly in small bills) occurs at the Charlotte, North Carolina office of Loomis, Fargo and Company. An FBI investigation eventually results in 24 convictions and the recovery of approximately 95 percent of the stolen cash.
- 2001 - The first case of anthrax attack in the U.S. is announced by federal officials.
- 2001 - A hunter shoots a hole in the trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline, causing a leak of 1.1 million litres of oil into the wilderness.
- 2004 - The White Knight carrier plane launches SpaceShipOne rocket plane, piloted by Brian Binnie, which flies into space (69.6 miles high) and back. Because of this second successful flight within 2 weeks of the first flight, the Scaled Composites company wins the Ansari X Prize of US$10 million.
- 2006 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average closes above 11,800 for the first time rising 123.27 points, or 1.05%, finishing at 11,850.61.
