  • 1891 - American Numismatic Association is founded, with William G. Jerrems as first president.
  • 1931 - First infra-red photograph, Rochester, New York.
  • 1947 - North Guam Air Force Base is renamed Andersen Air Force Base.
  • 1950 - US forces invade Korea by crossing the 38th parallel.
  • 1958 - Potter Stewart appointed to US Supreme Court.
  • 1958 - US manned space-flight project renamed Project Mercury.
  • 1959 - A U.S. House subcommittee begins investigations of allegedly rigged TV quiz shows.
  • 1963 - Bobby Baker resigns as US Senate Democratic secretary.
  • 1967 - The Beatles turn down US$1 million New York concert offer by Sid Berstein.
  • 1968 - Motion Picture Association of America adopts film rating system.
  • 1980 - President Jimmy Carter signs Public Law 96-389, directing the Treasury Secretary to study various aspects of the role of gold in the domestic and international monetary systems, and report to Congress by October 7, 1981 (later extended to March 31, 1982).
  • 1982 - Cats musical opens a nearly 18-year run on Broadway.
  • 1983 - In New York, a magnitude 5.3 earthquake occurs.
  • 1998 - The United States Congress passes the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act, which gives copyright holders 20 more years of copyright privilege on work they control. This effectively freezes the public domain to works created before 1923 in the United States.
  • 1998 - The Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin attraction opens in the Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World in Florida.
  • 1999 - The 1999 Connecticut quarter dollar is introduced.
  • 2001 - The United States armed forces invade Afghanistan, with participation from the United Kingdom.
  • 2003 - Voters recall California Governor Gray Davis from office and elect actor Arnold Schwarzenegger to succeed him.
  • 2008 - New York stocks drop for a fifth straight day, resulting in the Dow Jones Industrial Average's biggest five-day point loss ever, more than 1400 points, or nearly 13 percent.
  • 2020 - Boom Technology unveils prototype XB-1 supersonic jet in Denver, Colorado.
