  • 1864 - Helena, Montana's capital, is founded.
  • 1893 - US Senate approves repealing Sherman Silver Purchase Act of 1890.
  • 1893 - The World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois, USA closes. A total of 27 million people visited over four months.
  • 1912 - USS New York is launched.
  • 1938 - Orson Welles broadcasts his radio play of H. G. Wells' The War of the Worlds, causing a nationwide (USA) panic. About a million radio listeners believe that a real Martian invasion is underway.
  • 1942 - R.E. Griffith opens the Hotel Last Frontier hotel/casino on the Los Angeles Highway, Nevada. This is Las Vegas' first themed resort, with an Old West theme.
  • 1945 - US government announces end of shoe rationing.
  • 1948 - 20 die and 6,000 made ill by smog in Donora, Pennsylvania, USA.
  • 1953 - Dr Albert Schweitzer and General George C Marshall win Nobel Peace Prize.
  • 1954 - Defense Department announces elimination of all segregated regiments.
  • 1972 - Worst US rail accident in 14 years; 45 die in Chicago, Illinois.
  • 1975 - New York Daily News runs headline "Ford to City: Drop Dead".
  • 1988 - Philip Morris buys Kraft Foods for US$13.1 billion.
  • 1988 - Two gambling clubs and one player share US$61.38 million California lotto jackpot.
  • 1992 - Disney releases the film Beauty and the Beast on videocassette. One million copies sell on the first day.
  • 2006 - The Esperanza Fire burns over 61 square miles of Cabazon, California mountain territory.
  • 2008 - The U.S. economy shrank by 0.3 percent in the third quarter (July-September), the most in seven years, with consumer spending during the quarter at the lowest in 28 years.
  • 2008 - The Philadelphia Phillies win the World Series of baseball, their first since 1980, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays four games to one. Game Five was suspended in the sixth inning on October 28 due to rain, with the score tied 2-2.
  • 2009 - The American Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation seizes nine failed banks, including Los Angeles-based California National Bank, the fourth-largest U.S. bank failure this year.

  • 1990 - Joseph Burrus, amateur magician in Fresno California, is crushed and dies after being bound in a plastic coffin and buried under seven tons of soil and concrete.
  • 2000 - Death of Steve Allen at age 78 from ruptured blood vessel in his heart wall; American comedian, composer, talk show host (The Tonight Show), and author (born 1921).
  • 2014 - Death of Thomas Menino, American politician, 53rd Mayor of Boston (born 1942).
