  • 1784 - Maryland grants citizenship to Lafayette and his descendants.
  • 1800 - President John Adams and First Lady Abigail Adams move into the new president's house.
  • 1838 - The branch mint in New Orleans re-opens.
  • 1848 - In Boston, Massachusetts, the first medical school for women, The Boston Female Medical School (which later merges with Boston University School of Medicine), opens.
  • 1861 - General George B McClellan is made general in chief of USA armies.
  • 1863 - Fortifications are built on Angel Island (San Francisco Bay) by troops.
  • 1864 - The US Post Office establishes postal money order system.
  • 1870 - Army Signal Services' Division of Telegrams and Reports organizes a national weather service, the forerunner of the US Weather Bureau.
  • 1879 - US patent office grants Thomas Edison patent on electric lamp.
  • 1893 - An Act of Congress declares bi-metallism (gold and silver as money) to be the policy of the United States.
  • 1918 - 97 die in New York City subway's worst accident.
  • 1936 - Rodeo Cowboys Association founded.
  • 1940 - First US air raid shelter, Fleetwood, Pennsylvania.
  • 1941 - The US extends a lend-lease loan of US$1 billion to the Soviet Union.
  • 1942 - John H Johnson publishes first issue of Negro Digest.
  • 1943 - Wartime dim-out ban lifted in San Francisco Bay, California area.
  • 1944 - Japanese begin launching large balloons with bombs destined for the west coast of North America. The balloons maintain a range of altitude by releasing sandbags or hydrogen automatically during their flight. The bombs are set to be released when all sandbags have been dropped.
  • 1950 - Puerto Rican nationalists (Collazo and Torresola) try to kill US President Harry Truman at the Blair House in Washington, DC.
  • 1951 - First atomic explosion witnessed by troops, New Mexico, USA.
  • 1951 - Jet magazine founded by John H Johnson.
  • 1952 - First hydrogen thermonuclear device (10.4 megatons) exploded by US at Eniwetok Atoll in the Pacific Ocean. Code name for the project was Ivy Mike.
  • 1955 - Time bomb aboard United DC-6 flight kills 44 above Longmont, Colorado.
  • 1965 - First concert at Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, California, USA.
  • 1972 - Standard Oil (New Jersey) changes its company name to Exxon.
  • 1979 - Tanker Burmah Agate off Galveston Bay, Texas, spills 10.7 million gallons of oil, in US's worst oil tanker spill disaster.
  • 1979 - Iranian Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini urges his people to demonstrate on November 4 and to expand attacks on United States and Israeli interests.
  • 1981 - US Postal Service raises First Class Mail from 18 cents to 20 cents per ounce.
  • 1983 - IBM announces the IBM PCjr. It features an Intel 8088 CPU, 64 kB RAM, detached keyboard, cartridge slots, and joystick, for $670.
  • 1995 - Participants in the Yugoslav War begin negotiations in Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio.
  • 1995 - The U.S. House of Representatives votes to ban "partial birth" abortions by a vote of 288-139.
  • 1995 - Intel formally announces and begins shipping the Pentium Pro processor, at speeds of 150 to 200 MHz. The processor incorporates 5.5 million transistors. Prices range from US$974 to $1989.
  • 2005 - The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall arrive in the United States for a state visit, their first overseas tour since their marriage.
  • 2005 - United States Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid and his fellow Democrats force a closed session of the Senate over the Lewis Libby indictment.
  • 2006 - The Stardust Resort & Casino closes after 48 years of business in Las Vegas.
  • 2009 - US lender CIT Group files for bankruptcy protection, arranging with bondholders to reduce debt by US$10 billion. In its filing it showed US$71 billion in finance and leasing assets against total debt of US$64.9 billion, making this the fifth biggest in US corporate history.
