  • 1777 - Horace Walpole writes to Countess of Upper Ossory "I rejoice that the Americans are to be free, as they had a right to be, and as I am sure they have shown they deserve to be."
  • 1792 - George Washington is re-elected as US President, with John Adams as Vice-President.
  • 1804 - Thomas Jefferson is re-elected US President, with George Clinton as Vice-President.
  • 1831 - Former President John Quincy Adams takes his seat as member of House of Representatives.
  • 1832 - Andrew Jackson re-elected President of US, with Martin Van Buren as Vice-President.
  • 1848 - US President James Polk confirms to Congress the discovery of gold in California.
  • 1854 - Aaron Allen of Boston, Massachusetts, USA patents folding theater chair.
  • 1862 - Battle of Coffeeville, Mississippi, CSA.

  • 1876 - Fire at Brooklyn Theater, New York, kills 295, trampled or burned to death.
  • 1881 - 47th US Congress (1881-83) convenes.
  • 1929 - First US nudist organization (American League for Physical Culture, New York City, New York).
  • 1933 - US 21st Amendment ratified, only amendment adopted to repeal an earlier amendment [18th Amendment (Prohibition)].
  • 1935 - First commercial hydroponics operation established (Montebello, California).
  • 1935 - National Council of Negro Women forms by Mary McLeod Bethune (New York City, New York).
  • 1941 - US aircraft carrier Lexington and five heavy cruisers leave Pearl Harbor.
  • 1945 - Five U.S. Navy Avenger torpedo-bombers with 14 crew from Fort Lauderdale Naval Air Station in Florida disappear over the Atlantic Ocean, in what becomes known as The Bermuda Triangle. A search and rescue Mariner aircraft with a 13-man crew also disappears.
  • 1946 - US President Harry Truman creates Committee on Civil Rights by Executive Order #9808.
  • 1950 - American forces abandon Pyongyang.
  • 1955 - AFL and CIO merge, with George Meany as president.
  • 1955 - Historic bus boycott begins in Montgomery, Alabama, by Rosa Parks.
  • 1957 - New York City becomes first city to legislate against racial or religious discrimination in housing market (Fair Housing Practices Law).
  • 1969 - US performs nuclear test at Nevada Test Site.
  • 1981 - American general James Lee Dozier is kidnapped in Verona by Italian Red Brigades.
  • 1982 - Seattle University Baptist Church declares sanctuary for Central American refugees.
  • 1988 - North Carolina federal grand jury indicts PTL founder Jim Bakker on fraud and conspiracy.
  • 1988 - Shuttle Atlantis (STS-27) launches world's first nuclear-war-fighting satellite.
  • 1991 - Charles Keating Junior (Lincoln Savings and Loan fraud), found guilty.
  • 1991 - New York Daily News files for bankruptcy protection under chapter 11.
  • 1992 - Kent Conrad of North Dakota resigns his seat in the United States Senate and is sworn into the other seat from North Dakota, becoming the only U.S. Senator ever to have held two seats on the same day.
  • 1993 - Astronauts begin repair of Hubble telescope in space.
  • 2007 - 19-year old Robert A. Hawkins shoots eight people dead and injures five at the Westroads Mall in Omaha, Nebraska, then commits suicide.
  • 2008 - The US White House and congressional democrats agree on a plan to provide a US$15 billion emergency loan to the country's automakers.
