  • 1864 - USA Army General Tecumseh Sherman's armies reach Savannah, Georgia, and twelve-day siege begins.
  • 1869 - Women suffrage (right to vote) granted in Wyoming Territory (US first).
  • 1898 - Signing of the Treaty of Paris ends war between the USA and Spain. Under terms of the treaty, control of the Philippine Islands, Puerto Rico, and Cuba are turned over to the USA.
  • 1906 - First American awarded Nobel Peace Prize - President Theodore Roosevelt.
  • 1911 - Calbraith Rogers completes first crossing of US by airplane (84 days).
  • 1915 - 10,000,000th Ford Model T car is assembled.
  • 1920 - President Woodrow Wilson receives Nobel Peace Prize.
  • 1927 - "Grand Ole Opry" makes its first radio broadcast, in Nashville, Tennessee.
  • 1931 - American Jane Addams named co-recipient of Nobel Peace Prize.
  • 1937 - Dollar Line's SS President Hoover runs aground off Japanese island of Formosa. All passengers are transferred to the SS President Pierce after four days. The ship is scavenged by the Japanese in 1939.
  • 1941 - Japanese troops land on northern Luzon in the Philippines.
  • 1941 - Japanese forces capture Guam.
  • 1950 - In Saint Louis, Missouri, USA a falling meteorite strikes a car.
  • 1958 - First domestic (New York-Miami) passenger jet flight-National 707 flies 111 passengers.
  • 1961 - US performs nuclear test at Carlsbad, New Mexico (underground).
  • 1964 - Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Dr Martin Luther King Junior.
  • 1971 - William H Rehnquist confirmed as US Supreme Court justice.
  • 1974 - Helios 1 launched by US, Germany; later makes closest flyby of Sun.
  • 1984 - In Claxton, Georgia, USA a mailbox is destroyed by a meteorite fall.
  • 1985 - Bill to balance the US federal budget passed by Congress.
  • 1991 - Howard Spira sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for trying to extort money from New York Yankees' owner George Steinbrenner.
  • 1991 - IM Pei receives $5 million for design of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
  • 1993 - id Software releases the Doom game for MS-DOS to the public, via the ftp site on the University of Wisconsin's computer system. The game's name was inspired by a scene in the movie The Color of Money.
  • 1995 - Worst snowstorm in Buffalo history, 37.9 inches in 24 hours, breaking previous record of 25.3 inches in 1982.
  • 2004 - Malaysian freighter Selendang Ayu carrying 1.8 million litres of fuel oil snaps in two off Unalaska Island, Alaska, USA, releasing thousands of litres of fuel oil.
  • 2006 - NASA space shuttle Discovery lifts off from the Kennedy Space Center on the first night launch since the 2003 loss of Columbia.
  • 2020 - The United States reaffirms its previous recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Western Sahara and announces plans to build a consulate there.
  • 2020 - The United States and Saudi Arabia approve the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use, while Argentina approves Sputnik V.
  • 2021 - 36 tornados in Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, and Tennessee kill over 90 people.
