  • 1787 - Philadelphia's Free Africa Society organizes.
  • 1791 - Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton delivers Report on the Establishment of the Mint to House of Representatives. Hamilton proposes bimetallic standard of both gold and silver coins, $2.50 to $10 coins being 11 parts gold to 1 part alloy.
  • 1824 - William Kneass becomes third US chief engraver (1824-40).
  • 1833 - The Bank of the United States reports to the House Committee of Ways and Means the names of foreign stockholders of the Bank of the United States.
  • 1851 - Northwestern University (Chicago) chartered.
  • 1864 - Battle of New Bern, North Carolina.
  • 1878 - First telephone exchange (New Haven, Connecticut) begins operating.
  • 1878 - Yale Daily News is first published, first college daily newspaper.
  • 1899 - American Social Science Association incorporated by US Congress.
  • 1902 - The Carnegie Institute is founded in Washington, D.C.
  • 1909 - US military forces leave Cuba for second time.
  • 1914 - Beverly Hills, California, is incorporated.
  • 1915 - First US ship lost in Great War, William P Frye (carrying wheat to United Kingdom).
  • 1915 - US Coast Guard is created from Life-Saving Service and Revenue Cutter Service.
  • 1915 - US President Woodrow Wilson refuses to prohibit immigration of illiterates.
  • 1925 - -46 degrees F (-43 degrees C), Pittsburgh, New Hampshire (state record).
  • 1932 - First US state unemployment insurance act enacted, in Wisconsin.
  • 1934 - First US ski tow (rope) begins operation (Woodstock, Vermont).
  • 1945 - General "Vinegar Joe" Stillwell and truck convoy reopen Burma Road to China.
  • 1945 - American troops regain the front lines against the Germans held on December 16. Allied armies suffered about 83,000 casualties, and lost about 800 tanks. Germany lost over 100,000 men, 800 tanks, and 1000 aircraft.
  • 1951 - US performs nuclear test at Nevada Test Site.
  • 1958 - Construction begins on first private thorium-uranium nuclear reactor.
  • 1960 - First photograph bounced off Moon, from Washington DC.
  • 1963 - -34 degrees F (-37 degrees C) in Cynthiana, Kentucky, USA (state record).
  • 1979 - Wiz closes at Majestic Theater New York City, New York after 1672 performances.
  • 1980 - 37th Golden Globes: Dustin Hoffman and Sally Field win.
  • 1981 - Olympic Glory oil tanker at Galveston Bay, Texas, spills one million gallons of oil in a ship collision.
  • 1981 - William J Casey becomes the 13th director of US Central Intelligence Agency (until 1987).
  • 1982 - US conducts nuclear test at Nevada Test Site.
  • 1982 - Wally Boag gives his last performance at the Golden Horseshoe Revue at Disneyland. He performed in the show almost continuously since its opening in 1955, putting him in the Guiness Book of Records for the most number of performances of a show, about 40,000.
  • 1982 - In Padua, Italy, U.S. Brigadier General James L. Dozier is rescued by Italian anti-terrorism forces after 42 days of captivity under the Red Brigades.
  • 1985 - (to January 29) At the A&M studios in Los Angeles, California, 45 of the world's top recording artists create and record the song "We Are the World" under the project "USA for Africa", promoted by Ken Kragen, and conducted by Quincy Jones.
  • 1986 - 25th Space Shuttle mission (51L) - Challenger 10 explodes 73 seconds after liftoff. Killed are: Christa McAuliffe (teacher), Dr Judith Arlene Resnik, US Air Force Major Ellison S Onizuka, US Air Force Francis R Scobee, payload specialist Gregory B. Jarvis, US Navy Commander Michael J Smith, Ronald E McNair.
  • 1986 - Angolan Unity Leader Jonas Savimbi visits Washington, DC.
  • 1987 - US Foreign minister George Shultz meets African National Congress-leader Oliver Tambo.
  • 1991 - 18th American Music Awards: M C Hammer and Janet Jackson.
  • 1994 - Helicopter crashes into office building in San Jose, California, one dead.
  • 2007 - A battle between insurgents and U.S.-backed Iraqi troops kills 300 suspected terrorists in Najaf, Iraq.
  • 2008 - In Florida, USA, the Rupublican caucuses choose John McCain as candidate for the presidential election on November. The Democratic caucuses choose Hillary Clinton.
  • 2009 - The US House of Representatives passes President Barack Obama's US$819 billion economic stimulus package, voting 244 to 188.
  • 2019 - The U.S. Justice Department charges Chinese tech firm Huawei with multiple counts of fraud.
