  • 1791 - President George Washington signs a bill into law establishing a national bank, with 20 year charter. The Bank is capitalized with US$10 million, with $8 million from private investors.
  • 1793 - First US cabinet meeting (at George Washington's home).
  • 1799 - First federal forestry legislation authorizes purchase of timber land.
  • 1799 - US Congress passes first federal quarantine legislation.
  • 1813 - Congress authorizes interest-bearing $100 treasury notes.
  • 1837 - First US electric motor-powered printing press patented by Thomas Davenport of Rutlant, Vermont.
  • 1839 - Seminole Indians and black allies shipped from Tampa Bay, Florida, to the West.
  • 1862 - Paper currency is introduced in the USA, as Congress passes the Legal Tender Act. US$150 million of United States Notes is authorized, of which $60 million is legal tender.
  • 1862 - US Congress establishes the US Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
  • 1863 - US President Abraham Lincoln signs the National Currency Act into law, creating national banking system, comptroller of currency, allowing qualified banks to issue government-sponsored paper money in the banks' names.
  • 1875 - Kiowa Indians under Lone Wolf (Guipago) surrender at Fort Sill.
  • 1879 - US Congress passes first Timberland Protection Act.
  • 1891 - Charles Foster takes office as Treasury Secretary.
  • 1901 - US Steel Corporation organizes under directorship of J. Pierpoint Morgan.
  • 1907 - US proclaims protectorate over Dominican Republic.
  • 1908 - First tunnel under the Hudson River (railway tunnel) opens in New York.
  • 1913 - US 16th Amendment ratified, authorizing income tax.
  • 1919 - Oregon is first state to tax gasoline (1 cent per gallon).
  • 1925 - Glacier Bay National Monument established in Alaska.
  • 1933 - First genuine aircraft carrier christened, USS Ranger.
  • 1945 - US aircraft carriers attack Tokyo, Japan.
  • 1957 - US Supreme Court decides 6-3, baseball is only antitrust-exempt professional sport.
  • 1971 - Oh! Calcutta! opens at Belasco Theater in New York City for 1,316 performances.
  • 1977 - The Liberian-registered Hawaiian Patriot oil tanker catches fire in the Northern Pacific west of Honolulu, Hawaii, spilling 115 million litres of oil.
  • 1981 - US performs nuclear test at Nevada Test Site.
  • 1991 - Iraqi SCUD missile hits US barracks in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, killing 29, injuring 99.
  • 1992 - Digital Equipment unveils the 64-bit Alpha processor architecture, with speed estimates of 150 million instructions per second.
  • 2005 - Wichita, Kansas police apprehend the so-called BTK serial killer Dennis Rader, 31 years after his first murder.
  • 2007 - The 79th Academy Awards ceremony, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, takes place at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood. The Departed wins Best Picture.
  • 2022 - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lifts its advisory on mask wearing in most public spaces.
