  • 1781 - The Continental Congress adopts the Articles of Confederation, on the ratification by the 13 colonies of North America.
  • 1785 - Philadelphia Society for the Promotion of Agriculture organized.
  • 1803 - Ohio becomes 17th state to join the USA.
  • 1809 - Embargo Act of 1807 repealed and Non-Intercourse Act signed.
  • 1845 - US President John Tyler signs a resolution of Congress to accept Texas as a state.
  • 1847 - Michigan becomes first English-speaking jurisdiction to abolish the death penalty (except for treason against the state).
  • 1867 - Most of Nebraska becomes 37th US state (expanded later).
  • 1871 - J Milton Turner is named US minister to Liberia.
  • 1872 - Yellowstone National Park (world's first national park) is established under the act signed into law by President Ulysses Grant.
  • 1875 - US Congress passes Civil Rights Act; invalidated by Supreme Court, 1883.
  • 1877 - Death by hanging of convicted murderer Jack "Broken Nose" McCall for the murder of Will Bill Hickok.
  • 1893 - Diplomatic Appropriation Act, authorizes the US rank of ambassador.
  • 1909 - First US university school of nursing established, University of Minnesota.
  • 1910 - An avalanche of snow hits two trains stranded for seven days outside the Cascade Tunnel below Stevens Pass, near Wellington, Washington, USA, killing 96. Deadliest avalanche in US history.
  • 1913 - First state law requiring bonding of officers and state employees, North Dakota.
  • 1913 - US Federal income tax takes effect (16th Amendment).
  • 1917 - First US federal land bank chartered.
  • 1927 - Bank of Italy becomes a National Bank.
  • 1931 - The USS Arizona is placed back in full commission after a refit.
  • 1932 - Charles Lindbergh III, the 20-month-old son of aviation hero Charles Lindbergh, is kidnapped from the family's new mansion in Hopewell, New Jersey. A ransom note demanding US$50,000 is left in their son's empty room.
  • 1933 - Bank holidays declared in six US states, to prevent run on banks.
  • 1937 - First permanent automobile license plates issued (Connecticut).
  • 1937 - US Steel raises workers' wages to $5 a day.
  • 1940 - 12th Academy Awards: Gone With the Wind, Robert Donat and Vivien Leigh win.
  • 1941 - First US commercial FM radio station goes on the air, Nashville, Tennessee.
  • 1942 - Three day Battle of Java Sea ends, US suffers a major naval defeat.
  • 1945 - US President Franklin Roosevelt announces success of Yalta Conference.
  • 1945 - US infantry regiment captures Mönchengladbach.
  • 1954 - Four Puerto Ricans open fire in US House of Representatives injuring five Representatives.
  • 1954 - US explodes 15 megaton hydrogen bomb at Bikini Atoll.
  • 1961 - US President John Kennedy establishes the Peace Corps.
  • 1962 - American Airlines 707 plunges nose first into Jamaica Bay, New York, killing 95.
  • 1962 - First Kmart store opens.
  • 1962 - US/British nuclear test experiment in Nevada.
  • 1967 - House of Representatives expels Representative Adam Clayton Powell Junior (307 to 116).
  • 1970 - End of US commercial whale hunting.

  • 1983 - Tornado tears through Louisiana, USA, injuring 33 people.
  • 1984 - NASA launches Landsat-D Prime (Landsat 5) to thematic map the Earth.
  • 1985 - Pentagon accepts theory that atomic war would cause a nuclear winter.
  • 1988 - Courtney Gibbs Eplin, age 21, of Texas, crowned 37th Miss USA.
  • 1988 - Pontiac announces the end of the Fiero automobile.
  • 1989 - Louis Wade Sullivan starts his term of office as U.S. Secretary of Commerce.
  • 1989 - James D. Watkins starts his term of office as U.S. Secretary of Energy.
  • 1989 - The Berne Convention, an international treaty on copyrights, is ratified by the United States.
  • 1990 - In Texas, near-stock ZR-1 and L-98 Corvettes set a dozen land speed records. Average speed for all runs is 170- to 175-MPH.
  • 1990 - Steve Jackson Games is raided by the U.S. Secret Service, prompting the later formation of the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
  • 1991 - The ballistic missile submarine USS-ex-Sam Houston SSBN-609 is deactivated.
  • 1991 - Clayton Keith Yeutter ends term as the United States Secretary of Agriculture.
  • 1991 - US Embassy in Kuwait officially reopens.
  • 1993 - Authorities in Waco, Texas negotiate with Branch Davidians.
  • 1994 - US Senate rejects a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution.
  • 1994 - Mary Ellen Withrow begins her term of office as Treasurer of the United States, serving under President Bill Clinton.
  • 1995 - Part of Houston begins using new area code 261.
  • 1995 - Yahoo! web site is founded in Santa Clara, California.
  • 1996 - New toll-free 888 area code introduced in North America.
  • 2002 - Space Shuttle Columbia flies the Hubble Space Telescope service mission, its last before STS-107.
  • 2003 - The Turkish parliament votes against U.S. troop access to airbases in Turkey in order to attack Iraq from the north. The Bush administration starts working on Plan B, namely attacking Iraq from the south, through the Persian Gulf.
  • 2003 - The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, the United States Customs Service, and the United States Secret Service move to the United States Department of Homeland Security.
  • 2005 - The Supreme Court of the United States rules the death penalty unconstitutional for juveniles who committed their crimes before age 18.
  • 2008 - The 59-acre Aquatica water park opens at Sea World in Orlando, Florida, USA.
