  • 1845 - Robert J. Walker takes office as Treasury Secretary.
  • 1855 - First train crosses first US railway suspension bridge, Niagara Falls.
  • 1861 - Saint Augustine, Florida, CSA surrenders to US armies.
  • 1862 - Nat Gordon, last pirate, is hanged in New York City, New York for stealing 1,000 slaves.
  • 1862 - Battle of Elkhorn Tavern ends with Confederate withdrawal.
  • 1862 - Naval Engagement at Hampton Roads Virginia: CSS Virginia, Jamestown and Yorktown versus USS Cumberland, Congress and Monitor.
  • 1862 - Merrimack sends 24-gun sloop Cumberland to bottom, suffering 26 casualties and loss of 3 guns, anchor, and iron ram.
  • 1862 - Merrimack defeats 50-gun frigate Congress, leaving it burning (it later explodes), and runs Minnesota and Roanoke aground.
  • 1865 - Battle of Kingston, North Carolina (Wilcox's ridge, Wise's Forks).

  • 1979 - Shuttle Columbia (OV-102) transported 38 miles overland from Palmdale.

  • 1988 - Two U.S. Army helicopters collide in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, killing 17 servicemen.
