  • 1936 - Tupelo, Mississippi, USA virtually annihilated by a tornado, 216 die.
  • 1951 - Julius and Ethel Rosenberg sentenced to death for espionage in the USA.

  • 1986 - Two US soldiers and a Turkish woman killed, 230 injured, in West Berlin discotheque bombing.
  • 1989 - Late Night with David Letterman becomes first network TV series to use Dolby stereo.
  • 1991 - Former Texas Republican Senator John Tower (age 65) and 22 others are killed in an airplane crash in Brunswick, Georgia, United States. Tower was chairman of the Senate Armed Sevices Committee, and the Republican Policy Committee.
  • 1991 - US begins air drops to Kurdish refugees in Northern Iraq.
  • 1993 - Construction begins on Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
  • 1995 - The U.S. House of Representatives votes 246-188 to cut taxes for individuals and corporations.
  • 2010 - An explosion in the Upper Big Branch Mine-South coal mine in Raleigh County, West Virginia, USA kills 29 workers.

Heston won Best Actor Academy Award for his performance in Ben Hur. Heston also served as president of the Screen Actors Guild and was chairman of the American Film Institute.
