  • 1816 - President James Madison signs a bill into law establishing the second bank of the US, chartered for 20 years.
  • 1841 - New York Tribune newspaper begins publishing under editor Horace Greeley.
  • 1845 - More than 1,000 buildings are damaged by fire in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.
  • 1849 - Safety pin is patented by Walter Hunt (New York City, New York); sold rights for $100.
  • 1863 - Rebel General Earl Van Dorn attacks at Franklin, Tennessee.
  • 1865 - At Appomattox, Confederate General Robert Lee issues General Order #9, his last.
  • 1866 - The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is founded in New York City by philanthropist and diplomat Henry Bergh.
  • 1869 - US Congress increases number of Supreme Court judges from 7 to 9.
  • 1871 - P.T. Barnum's The Greatest Show on Earth opens.
  • 1872 - Arbor day first celebrated in Nebraska.
  • 1877 - Federal troops are withdrawn from Columbia, South Carolina.
  • 1878 - California State Cable Car Railroad Company starts service.
  • 1882 - Matson founds his shipping company (San Francisco and Hawaii).
  • 1884 - US Senate accepts Belgian administration of Congo.
  • 1887 - US President Abraham Lincoln is re-buried with his wife in Springfield, Illinois.
  • 1917 - Munition factory explosion at Eddystone, Pennsylvania, USA, kills 133 workers.
  • 1925 - Scribners publishes book The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald.
  • 1941 - In Washington, USA, a treaty is signed with the Danish government for the US to take over protection of Greenland.
  • 1945 - US troops land on Tsugen Shima, Okinawa, Japan.
  • 1953 - House of Wax, first 3-D movie, is released (New York City, New York).
  • 1960 - US Senate passes landmark Civil Rights Bill.
  • 1963 - American atomic-powered submarine USS Thresher sinks 220 miles east of Boston, Massachusetts from an unknown accident, with loss of all 129 men aboard.
  • 1963 - US performs nuclear test at Nevada Test Site.
  • 1968 - US performs nuclear test at Nevada Test Site.
  • 1972 - US, USSR and 70 other nations agree to ban biological weapons.
  • 1978 - Volkswagen becomes the second (after Rolls-Royce) non-American automobile manufacturer to open a plant in the United States, commencing production of the Rabbit, the North American version of the Volkswagen Golf, at the Volkswagen Westmoreland Assembly Plant near New Stanton, Pennsylvania with a unionized (UAW) workforce.
  • 1979 - A tornado hits Wichita Falls, Texas, killing 42 people (the most notable of 26 tornadoes that day).
  • 1984 - US Senate condemns Central Intelligence Agency mining of Nicaraguan harbors.
  • 1986 - US performs nuclear test at Nevada Test Site.
  • 1988 - 8th Golden Raspberry Awards: Leonard Part 6 wins.
  • 1989 - H J Heinz, Van Camp Seafood and Bumble Bee Seafood say they will not buy tuna caught in nets that also trap dolphins.
  • 1989 - Intel announces the 25 MHz i486 microprocessor. It integrates the 386 processor, 387 math coprocessor, and adds an 8 kB primary cache. It uses 1.2 million transistors, employing 1-micron technology. Initial price is US$900. Speed is 20 MIPS.
  • 1991 - Last automat (coin operated cafeteria) closes (3rd and 42nd Street, New York City, New York).
  • 1995 - New York City bans smoking in all restaurants that seat 35 or more.
  • 2020 - The American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention extends the no sail order for cruise ships under US jurisdiction for 100 more days, or until the COVID-19 outbreak is no longer considered a public health emergency, or until the no sail order is rescinded.
