  • 1792 - US Senate confirms David Rittenhouse as first US Mint director.
  • 1818 - US Medical Corp forms.
  • 1836 - US Congress forms Territory of Wisconsin.
  • 1853 - Harriet Tubman begins her Underground Railroad, helping slaves escape.
  • 1860 - First Pony Express rider arrives in San Francisco, California from Saint Joseph, Missouri.
  • 1861 - Formal USA surrender of Fort Sumter to CSA forces.
  • 1861 - Colonel Robert E Lee resigns from US army.
  • 1862 - Battle of Fort Pillow, Tennessee.
  • 1865 - John Wilkes Booth, an actor and Confederate sympathizer, fatally shoots US President Abraham Lincoln at a play at Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C.
  • 1865 - Lewis T. Powell bursts into US Secretary of State William Seward's home, seriously wounding him and three others.
  • 1865 - Mobile, Alabama, is captured by USA forces.
  • 1868 - South Carolina voters approve constitution, 70,758 to 27,228.
  • 1890 - Pan American Day-first conference of American states (Washington DC).
  • 1894 - First commercial public showing of Thomas Edison's Kinetoscope. The Holland Bros Kinetoscope Parlor in New York, USA, shows five short films for 25 cents.
  • 1903 - Dr Harry Plotz discovers vaccine against typhoid (New York City, New York).
  • 1906 - US President Theodore Roosevelt denounces "muckrakers" in US press.
  • 1918 - Douglas Campbell is first US ace pilot (shooting down 5th German plane).
  • 1928 - Maddus Airlines starts first regular passenger flights between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
  • 1942 - Destroyer Roper sinks German submarine U-85 off US east coast.
  • 1943 - Generals Alexander, Dwight Eisenhower, Anderson, Bradley discuss assault on Tunis.
  • 1944 - In the harbor in Bombay, India, American cargo ship SS Fort Stikine explodes. It was carrying 1395 tons of explosives, and gold for the Indian Treasury. Ten nearby ships are destroyed, 500 people are killed, and 8000 injured.
  • 1944 - US General Dwight Eisenhower becomes head commander of Allied air fleet.
  • 1945 - American B-29 make incendiary raids on Tokyo, Japan, and damage the Imperial Palace.
  • 1945 - US forces conquer Motobu peninsula on Okinawa.
  • 1945 - US marines attack Yae Take on Okinawa, Japan.
  • 1948 - US performs atmospheric nuclear test at Enwetak.
  • 1959 - (President Robert) Taft Memorial Bell Tower dedicated in Washington DC.
  • 1961 - Cuban-American invasion army departs Nicaragua.
  • 1961 - US element 103 (Lawrencium) discovered.
  • 1965 - US performs nuclear test at Nevada Test Site.
  • 1967 - In the Vietnam War, US planes bomb Haiphong for first time.
  • 1969 - 41st Academy Awards - Oliver, Cliff Robertson, and Katharine Hepburn/ Barbra Streisand win.
  • 1969 - Student Afro-American Society seized at Columbia College.
  • 1971 - Fort Point, San Francisco dedicated as a national historic site.
  • 1971 - US President Richard Nixon ends blockade against People's Republic of China.
  • 1971 - US Supreme Court upholds busing as means of achieving racial desegregation.
  • 1973 - Acting FBI director L Patrick Gray resigns after admitting he destroyed evidence in the Watergate scandal.
  • 1977 - US Supreme Court rules people may refuse to display state motto on car license.
  • 1979 - Susan Horvath, of Pennsylvania, crowned America's Young Woman of the Year.
  • 1980 - 52nd Academy Awards: Best Picture: Kramer versus Kramer, Best Actor: Dustin Hoffman, Best Actress: Sally Field, Best Foreign Film: Die Blechtrommel (The Tin Drum) (first Oscar award for a German film).
  • 1981 - First Space Shuttle - Columbia 1 - returns to Earth.
  • 1983 - US President Ronald Reagan signs US$165 billion Social Security rescue.
  • 1986 - 21st Academy of Country Music Awards: George Strait, Alabama, Reba McEntire.
  • 1988 - USSR, US, Pakistan, and Afghanistan sign Afghanistan treaty (Geneva Accords). The Soviet Union commits itself to withdrawal of its forces from Afghanistan.
  • 1988 - The USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG-58) strikes a naval mine in the Persian Gulf.
  • 1989 - In the Iran-Contra trial, Oliver North's case goes to the jury.
  • 1992 - Court throws out Apple Computer's lawsuit against Microsoft.
  • 1992 - United Auto Workers ends five month strike against Caterpillar Inc.
  • 1993 - Branch Davidian cult leader David Koresh promises to surrender after completion of his Seven Seals manuscript.
  • 1994 - US F-15 accidentally shoots two US helicopters down over Iraq, 26 die.
  • 1995 - In Western Texas, a magnitude 5.7 earthquake occurs.
  • 2008 - Delta Air Lines announces it will acquire Northwest Airlines for US$3 billion in stock, creating the world's biggest airline.
  • 2018 - The United States, the United Kingdom and France order the bombing of Syrian military bases in response to the sarin attack allegedly by the Bashar al-Assad regime on civilians in Ghouta.
