  • 1989 - AT&T announces New Jersey's 201 area code will split into 908 and 201.
  • 1991 - 70 tornadoes break out in the central United States, killing 17. The most notable tornado of the day strikes Andover, Kansas.
  • 1992 - Offshore Cape Mendocino, California, magnitude 6.5 and 6.7 earthquakes occur, 3.5 hours apart. Felt throughout much of northern California and southern Oregon.
  • 1993 - STS-55 (Columbia) launches into orbit.
  • 1995 - American baseball season begins after lengthy strike.
  • 2004 - The US Bureau of Engraving and Printing introduces new US$50 Federal Reserve notes, incorporating color and more complex security elements.
