  • 1862 - Peninsular Campaign - Battle of Williamsburg, Virginia.
  • 1863 - Battle of Tupelo, Mississippi.
  • 1864 - Alexander Hays, USA-general-major, dies in battle at age 44.
  • 1864 - John Marshall Jones, Confederate Brigadier-General, dies in battle at age 43.
  • 1864 - Leroy A Stafford, Confederate Brigadier-General, dies in battle at age 42.
  • 1864 - Atlanta Campaign - Five days fighting begins at Rocky Face Ridge.

  • 1943 - Postmaster General Frank C Walker invents Postal Zone System.
  • 1945 - (1430 hours) German Army Group G of 200-400,000 men surrenders to General Jacob Devers and the US 6th Army Group. Lieutenant General Foertsch signs for Germany. The official cease-fire and surrender is to take effect at noon May 6.
  • 1947 - Mississippi Valley flooding kills 16 and causes $850 million in damage.
  • 1955 - Damn Yankees opens at 46th Steet Theater in New York City for 1022 performances.
  • 1955 - US performs nuclear test at Nevada test Site.
  • 1958 - US performs atmospheric nuclear test at Enwetak.
  • 1961 - American NASA space program launches Alan Shepard aboard Freedom 7 toward space, becomes first American in space, lasting 15 minutes, landing 302.5 miles downrange.
  • 1964 - The US Treasury Department bans the purchase abroad and import of postage stamps of North Vietnam.
  • 1965 - First large-scale US Army ground units arrive in South Vietnam.
  • 1970 - US performs nuclear test at Nevada test Site.
  • 1971 - Race riot in Brownsville section of Brooklyn (New York City).
  • 1979 - Masterpiece Radio Theater begins broadcasting.
  • 1982 - A Unabomber bomb explodes in the computer science department at Vanderbilt University; secretary Janet Smith is injured.
  • 1983 - US performs nuclear test at Nevada Test Site.
  • 1987 - Disneyland debuts "Disney Dollars". Mickey Mouse and Sleeping Beauty's Castle are on the $1 bill, Goofy and the Mark Twain Riverboat are on the $5 bill.
  • 1987 - US Congress begins Iran-Contra hearings.
  • 1987 - The Assemblies of God defrocks PTL's Jim Bakker.
  • 1992 - Alabama ratifies a 202-year-old proposed amendment to the United States Constitution making the 27th Amendment law. This amendment bars the U.S. Congress from giving itself a midterm or retroactive pay raise.
  • 2008 - Crude oil prices for June delivery in the US hit a record US$120.36 per barrel.
  • 2018 - NASA's unmanned spaceprobe InSight is launched. It is expected to land on Mars in November and use a drill to conduct geological science.
