  • 1860 - San Francisco Olympic Club, first US athletic club founded.
  • 1861 - Arkansas becomes ninth state to secede from USA.
  • 1861 - CSA President Jefferson Davis approves a bill declaring War between US and Confederacy.
  • 1864 - Henry Livermore Abbott, USA Brigadier-General, dies in battle.
  • 1864 - Micah Jenkins, Confederate Brigadier-General (friendly fire), dies at age 28.
  • 1864 - Battle of Port Walthall Junction, Virginia.
  • 1864 - USA Army General Tecumseh Sherman begins advance to Atlanta, Georgia.
  • 1882 - Chinese Exclusion Act: US Congress ceases Chinese immigration.
  • 1904 - American Lung Association holds its first meeting.
  • 1929 - New York to San Francisco footrace begins.
  • 1937 - (1825 hours) Airship Hindenburg attempts landing at Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey, USA. A sudden explosion and fire destroys the ship, killing 36 people. The Hindenburg was the largest rigid airship ever built; the largest aircraft of any type ever to fly. The US Department of Commerce official investigation finds the cause of the accident to be ignition of hydrogen and air, most likely set off by atmospheric discharge.
  • 1941 - At California's March Field, Bob Hope performs his first USO show.
  • 1942 - Corregidor surrenders to the Japanese, putting all of the Philippines under Japanese control.
  • 1959 - In Hollywood, California, the 11th Annual Emmy Awards are presented, hosted by Raymond Burr.

  • 1967 - 400 students seize administration building at Cheyney State College.
  • 1974 - Roberta Parks disappears from Oregon State University, Corvallis Oregon (Ted Bundy victim).
  • 1975 - Lynette Culver disappears from Pocatello, Idaho (Ted Bundy victim).
  • 1975 - Early warnings provided by REACT (ham radio operators) means only three people die in tornado that strikes Omaha, Nebraska.
  • 1981 - US expels Libyan diplomats.
  • 1981 - A jury of architects and sculptors unanimously selects Maya Lin's design for the US Vietnam Veterans Memorial from 1,421 other entries.
  • 1985 - 17th Space Shuttle Mission (51-B)-Challenger 7 lands at Edwards Air Force Base.
  • 1986 - Donald E Pelotte becomes first native American bishop.
  • 1994 - US House of Representatives passes the assault weapons ban.
  • 1997 - Michael Jackson and Bee Gees inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
  • 2008 - In Jackson, Georgia, USA, convicted murderer William Earl Lynd is executed by lethal injection, at age 53. Lynd was convicted of killing Ginger Moore in December 1988.
  • 2010 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average suffers its biggest ever intraday point drop: 998.5 points. During the market's fall some shares briefly fell to nearly zero. By the end of the trading day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 347.80 points, or 3.20 percent, to 10,520.32. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index fell 3.24 percent, to 1,128.15. The Nasdaq Composite Index lost 3.44 percent, to 2,319.64.
