  • 1797 - First US Navy ship, the United States is launched.
  • 1823 - First steamboat to navigate the Mississippi River arrives at Fort Snelling.
  • 1837 - Panic of 1837 begins, as US banks in New York refuse to pay out gold and silver in exchange for deposit notes; beginning of economic depression.
  • 1849 - Riot destroys Astor Place opera house in New York City (22 killed).
  • 1861 - US troops march on state militia in Saint Louis, Missouri.
  • 1862 - Battle of Plum Run Bend, Tennessee (Plum Point Bend).
  • 1862 - Norfolk, Virginia is captured by US forces. Merrimack commander Josiah Tatnall has ship set afire to destroy it.
  • 1863 - Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson, CSA General, dies from wounds received at Chancellorsville.
  • 1864 - James Clay Rice, lawyer/USA Brigadier-General, dies in battle at age 34.
  • 1864 - Thomas Greeley Stevenson, USA Brigadier-General, dies at about age 27.
  • 1864 - Battles at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia.

  • 1919 - Race riot in Charleston, South Carolina, USA; two blacks killed.

  • 1944 - US court case Smith v Allwright: excluding Blacks from primary voting is illegal.
  • 1945 - Allies capture Rangoon from the Japanese.
  • 1945 - A fleet of 334 American B-29 bombers are sent from the Marianas to destroy the Shitamachi district of Tokyo, Japan. About 100,000 are killed and 1 million left homeless. Most deadly single air raid in history.
  • 1950 - First Netherlands-US telex is sent.
  • 1960 - US atomic submarine USS Triton completes first circumnavigation of globe under water.
  • 1967 - Stockholm Vietnam-Tribunal declares US aggression in Vietnam/Cambodia.
  • 1967 - US performs nuclear test at Nevada Test Site.
  • 1968 - Vietnam peace talks begin in Paris, France, between the US and North Vietnam.
  • 1969 - Apollo 10 transmits first color pictures of Earth from space.
  • 1969 - US troops begin attack on Hill 937/Hamburger Hill, Vietnam.

  • 1984 - International Court of Justice rules on US blockade of Nicaragua.
  • 1993 - Paul Cézanne's still life painting sells for US$28.6 million in New York City.

  • 1996 - Two US Marine helicopters collide during joint US and British war games.
  • 2002 - FBI agent Robert Hanssen is sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for selling American secrets to Moscow for $1.4 million in cash and diamonds.
  • 2019 - The United States' 25 percent tariff hike on US$200 billion worth of Chinese imports takes effect.
