- 1985 - Laura Elena Martinez-Herring, age 21 of Texas, crowned 34th Miss USA.
- 1985 - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Mayor Wilson Goode orders police to storm the radical group MOVE's headquarters to end a stand-off. The police drop an explosive device into the headquarters, killing 11 MOVE members and destroying the homes of 61 city residents in the resulting fire.
- 1991 - Apple releases Macintosh System 7.0 operating system.
- 1995 - Chelsi Smith, 21, of USA, crowned 44th Miss Universe; Shanna Lynn Moakler, (age 19, Miss New York), replaces Chelsi Smith as Miss USA.
- 2005 - The United States Department of Defense issues a list of bases to be closed as part of the Base Realignment and Closure process (BRAC 2005).
