  • 1862 - Battle of Winchester, Virginia.

  • 1977 - 20th Century Fox releases the film Star Wars - Episode IV: A New Hope to theaters in the USA.
  • 1978 - A bomb explodes in the security section of Northwestern University, wounding a security guard (the first Unabomber attack).
  • 1979 - John Spenkelink is executed in Florida, in the first use of the electric chair in America after the reintroduction of death penalty in 1976.
  • 1979 - In Chicago, Illinois, USA, American Airlines Flight 191 DC-10 crashes during takeoff at O'Hare International Airport, killing all 271 on board and 2 people on the ground in the deadliest aviation accident in U. S. history.
  • 1981 - Daniel Goodwin scales outside of Chicago's Sears Tower in 7 hours.
  • 1986 - 95-year-old woman scores a hole-in-one in Florida.
  • 1986 - Hands Across America - 7 million people hold hands from California to New York, to raise money to fight hunger and homelessness.
  • 1989 - Eastern Airlines graduates its first class of non-union pilots.
  • 1989 - Thirteen days after a Southern Pacific train derails, a Calnev pipeline explodes at the same section of Duffy Street in San Bernardino, California.
  • 1996 - Jennifer Maria Holsten, 18, crowned Miss Filipino-American.
  • 1997 - Strom Thurmond becomes the longest serving member in the history of the United States Senate (41 years and 10 months).
  • 2006 - Kenneth Lay, CEO of Enron, is indicted on ten counts of securities fraud and related charges.
  • 2008 - NASA's Mars Phoenix lander touches down in the far north of Mars, sending back to Earth pictures of a region never previously seen up close.
