  • 1863 - Battle of Brice's Crossroads, Mississippi; Forrest with 3500 defeats 8000 Federal troops.
  • 1898 - US Marines land in Cuba, during Spanish-American War.
  • 1899 - The Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks forms in Cincinnati, Ohio.
  • 1905 - First forest fire lookout tower placed in operation, Greenville, Maine, USA.
  • 1908 - First flying club, Aeronautical Society of New York, opens.
  • 1924 - First political convention broadcast on radio: Republicans at Cleveland, Ohio.

  • 1977 - Apple Computer ships its first Apple II personal computer.
  • 1977 - James Earl Ray (convicted killer of Martin Luther King Junior) escapes from prison.
  • 1980 - A Unabomber bomb injures United Airlines president Percy Wood in Lake Forest, Illinois.
  • 1981 - The Reagan administration requests authorization from Congress to sell silver beginning in October to help balance the federal budget.
  • 1983 - Texas Instruments announces that poor sales of TI 99/4A computers, software, and peripherals would result in a second quarter loss of US$100 million. The news drives the company's stock price down almost US$50.
  • 1984 - US missile shoots down an incoming missile in space for first time.
  • 1985 - Coca-Cola announces they would bring back their 99-year-old formula.
  • 1987 - In Illinois, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake occurs.
  • 1991 - Mother of All Parades-New York City welcomes Desert Storm troops.
  • 1996 - In the Andreanof Islands, Alaska, magnitude 7.9 and 7.3 earthquakes occurs.
  • 2003 - NASA begins its Mars Exploration Rover mission by launching Spirit Rover.
