  • 1798 - Mission San Luis Rey de Francia founded in California.
  • 1866 - US Congress passes the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, repudiating debt incurred by the Confederate States of America. The amendment is referred to state legislatures for ratification.
  • 1888 - US Congress creates the Department of Labor.
  • 1898 - Congress authorizes bonds to finance the Spanish-American War.
  • 1910 - Pilot Charles Hamilton makes first one-day round-trip from New York to Philadelphia.
  • 1910 - William D Crum, a South Carolina physician, is appointed minister to Liberia.
  • 1927 - A ticker-tape parade down 5th Avenue in New York City is held for aviator Charles Lindbergh.
  • 1933 - First sodium vapor lamps installed (Schenectady, New York).
  • 1933 - Federal Home Owners Loan Corporation authorized.
  • 1942 - (evening) George Dasch, Ernest Burger, Heinrich Heinck, and Richard Quirin, all American citizens of German birth, and members of the German Nazi party, land on the beach of Long Island, New York, from a small row boat. Their mission is to sabotage industrial installations producing war material.
  • 1945 - American Military Government in Venezia Giulia is established, at the northern end of Adriatic Sea, claimed by both Italy and Yugoslavia.
  • 1946 - First transcontinental round-trip flight in one day, California-Maryland.
  • 1966 - The US Supreme Court hands down its decision in Miranda v. Arizona, establishing the principle that all criminal suspects must be advised of their rights before interrogation. The adopted text: "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can, and will, be used against you in court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford one, one will be appointed to you."
  • 1967 - U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson nominates Solicitor-General Thurgood Marshall as justice on the U.S. Supreme Court.
  • 1968 - The Smithsonian Institution receives its single largest donation of 6125 US gold coins from the Josiah K. Lilly estate, in exchange for a Congress-approved $5.5 million tax write-off for the estate.
  • 1971 - New York Times begins publishing "The Pentagon Papers".
  • 1977 - Convicted assassin James Earl Ray recaptured.
  • 1980 - Republican John Jenrette Junior (Democrat-South Carolina) indicted in "Abscam" investigation.
  • 1981 - In Salem, Oregon, USA a building is hit by a falling meteorite.
  • 1983 - Pioneer 10 becomes first man-made object to leave solar system.
  • 1985 - In Auburn, Washington, police defuse a Unabomber bomb sent to Boeing.
  • 1986 - US President Ronald Reagan criticizes South African state of emergency.
  • 1987 - Daniel Buettner, Bret Anderson, Martin Engel, and Anne Knabe complete cycling journey of 15,266 miles from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska to Argentina.
  • 1990 - Boeing 767 sets nonstop commercial flight: Seattle, Washington to Narobi, Kenya.
  • 1990 - Washington DC mayor Marion Barry announces he will not seek a fourth term.
  • 1996 - An 81-day standoff between the Montana Freemen and FBI agents ends with their surrender in Montana.
  • 1997 - A jury sentences Timothy McVeigh to the death penalty for his part in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.
  • 1998 - In Portales, New Mexico, USA a meteorite penetrates a barn roof.
  • 2009 - New York-based theme park operator Six Flags files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, with US$2.4 billion in debt.
  • 2016 - Microsoft announces it will acquire LinkedIn for US$262 billion, 50 percent over share market price.
