  • 1862 - Slavery outlawed in US territories.
  • 1864 - CSS Alabama sunk by USS Kearsarge off Cherbourg, France.
  • 1865 - All slaves in Texas are freed.
  • 1868 - Major General E R S Canby removes mayor of Columbia, South Carolina.
  • 1875 - Formal opening of US Marine Hospital at Presidio.
  • 1910 - Father's Day celebrated for first time (Spokane, Washington, USA).
  • 1914 - A radiotelegraphic link is established between Germany and the United States - German Emperor Wilhelm II and U.S. President Woodrow Wilson exchange telegrams to mark the event.
  • 1931 - First photoelectric cell installed commercially, in West Haven, Connecticut, USA.
  • 1931 - In an attempt to stop the banking crisis in Central Europe from causing a worldwide financial meltdown, President Herbert Hoover issues the Hoover Moratorium.
  • 1934 - US Congress pases the Silver Purchase Act, directing the Secretary of the Treasury to purchase silver until market price reaches $1.2929 per ounce, or until value of silver stock reaches one-third of gold stock.
  • 1934 - Federal Communications Commission (FCC) created.
  • 1938 - Olympian Flyer express train crashes in Montana, USA, killing 47.
  • 1944 - The Battle of the Philippine Sea takes place, over two days. Allied ships sink three Japanese aircraft carriers, damage two more, and destroy 426 of 473 planes.
  • 1947 - First plane (F-80) to exceed 600 mph (1004 kph)-Albert Boyd, Muroc, California.
  • 1950 - In Orange County, California, USA, C.J. Hart opens the world's first commercial automotive dragstrip.
  • 1953 - Albert W Dent is elected president of National Health Council.
  • 1959 - US Senate rejects President Dwight Eisenhower's appointment of Lewis Strauss for Secretary of Commerce.
  • 1961 - US Supreme Court strikes down a provision in Maryland's constitution.
  • 1969 - State troopers ordered to Cairo, Illinois, to quell racial disturbances.
  • 1971 - Mayor declares state of emergency in Columbus, Georgia, USA, for racial disturbance.
  • 1977 - Pope Paul VI makes 19th-century bishop John Neumann first US male saint.
  • 1978 - The Garfield comic strip debuts, eventually growing to produce over US$1 billion in revenue in over 110 countries.
  • 1987 - Geffen Records sign their first artist (Donna Summer).
  • 1987 - The Supreme Court of the United States rules that a Louisiana law requiring that creation science be taught in public schools whenever evolution was taught is unconstitutional.
  • 2006 - A meteor show is observed in various places in Pennsylvania, USA.
  • 2018 - The United States announces it will withdraw from the United Nations Human Rights Council.
