  • 1925 - Landslides create 3-mile long "Slide Lake" (Gros Ventre, Wyoming, USA).
  • 1931 - Wiley Post and Harold Gatty take off from Roosevelt Field, Long Island in an attempt to accomplish the first round-the-world flight in a single-engine plane.
  • 1938 - US Civil Aeronautics Authority established.
  • 1938 - Marineland opens in Florida, USA; first aquarium.
  • 1944 - Four tornadoes strike Appalachia, killing 153.
  • 1947 - US President Harry Truman's veto of Taft-Hartley Act overridden by Congress.
  • 1951 - Most expensive US hailstorm (US$1.5 million crop damage and US$14 million property - Kansas).
  • 1954 - 122 degrees F (50 degrees C), Overton, Nevada (state record).
  • 1963 - The Enchanted Tiki Room attraction opens in Adventureland at Disneyland. This is the first attraction with sophisticated Audio-Animatronic figures, 225 of them.
  • 1967 - US President Lyndon Johnson and Alexei Kosygin hold first of two summit meetings in Glassboro, New Jersey.
  • 1967 - US Senate censures Thomas J Dodd (Democrat-Connecticut) for misusing campaign funds.
  • 1969 - Warren E Burger sworn in as US Supreme Court Chief Justice.
  • 1972 - Hurricane Agnes is costliest natural disaster in American history.
  • 1972 - US President Richard Nixon and Chief of Staff Harry Haldeman agree to use Central Intelligence Agency to cover up Watergate.
  • 1972 - US President Richard Nixon signs act barring sex discrimination in college sports.
  • 1981 - Amanda Maccaro becomes first American to win Russian Ballet Competition.
  • 1986 - Tip O'Neill refuses to let US President Ronald Reagan address House.
  • 1992 - Mafia boss John Gotti is sentenced to life in prison, after being found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder and racketeering on April 2.
  • 2003 - The Supreme Court of the United States upholds affirmative action in university admissions.
  • 2006 - In Miami, Florida, the Federal Bureau of Investigation arrests seven men, accusing them of planning to bomb the Sears Tower and other attacks in Miami.
  • 2010 - US General Stanley McChrystal is forced to resign as US commander of forces in Afghanistan, replaced by General David Petraeus.
  • 2016 - The US Supreme Court upholds (4-3 decision) the right of the University of Texas to give consideration to skin color when admitting students.
  • 2022 - The US Supreme Court rules the 2nd Amendment provision to "keep and bear arms" does not allow individual states to use any discretion when issuing concealed-carry licences.
