  • 1922 - The American Library Association awards the first Newberry Medal, honoring the year's best children's book, to The Story of Mankind by Hendrik Willem van Loon.

  • 1957 - 390 die by Hurricane Audrey in coastal Louisiana and Texas, USA.
  • 1957 - President Dwight Eisenhower issues an executive order creating the Distinguished Civilian Service Awards Board.
  • 1960 - Chlorophyll "A" synthesized at Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.
  • 1962 - NASA civilian pilot Joseph Walker takes X-15 to 6,606 kph, 37.7km.
  • 1963 - US President John Kennedy spends first full day in Ireland.
  • 1963 - US Air Force Major Robert A Rushworth in X-15 reaches 86,900 metres altitude.
  • 1967 - Race riot in Buffalo, New York; 200 arrested.
  • 1969 - 50,000 attend Denver Pop Festival.
  • 1969 - Police raid the Stonewall Gay Bar in Greenwich Village, New York; about 400 to 1,000 patrons riot against police, lasting three days.
  • 1973 - John W Dean tells Watergate Committee about President Richard Nixon's "enemies list".
  • 1977 - 5-4 US Supreme Court decision allows lawyers to advertise.
  • 1980 - U.S. President Jimmy Carter signs Proclamation 4771 requiring 19- and 20-year-old males to register for a peacetime military draft, in response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
  • 1982 - 4th Space Shuttle Mission-Columbia 4 launched.
  • 1984 - The Federal Communications Commission reduces regulation of U.S. commercial TV by lifting most programming requirements and ending day-part restrictions on advertising.
  • 1984 - US Supreme Court ends NCAA monopoly on college football telecasts.
  • 1985 - Route 66 in the USA is officially decommissioned.
  • 1986 - US informs New Zealand it will not defend it against attack.
  • 1986 - World Court rules US aid to Nicaraguan contras illegal.
  • 1987 - US Supreme Court Justice Powell retires.
  • 1990 - Merrill Lynch begins selling up to US$2.25 billion convertible bonds for the Walt Disney Company, the largest such issue in US history. The bond issue is to raise funds for building Euro Disneyland in France.
  • 1993 - U.S. President Bill Clinton orders a cruise missile attack on Iraqi intelligence headquarters in the Al-Mansur District of Baghdad, in response to the attempted assassination of former U.S. President George H. W. Bush during his visit to Kuwait in mid-April.
  • 1995 - American space shuttle Atlantis blasts off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This is the 100th human space mission in American history.
  • 2003 - In Nashville, Tennessee, General Motors holds the Official Corvette 50th Anniversary Celebration, over two days. About 10,000 Corvettes and 18,000 people attend. Special cars on hand include the Tiger Shark, XP-880 Astro II, 1963 Monza SS, Astro I, 1969 aluminum Reynolds Corvette EXP 040, 1973 Aerovette, CERV III, CERV IV, C5-R #50 Le Mans race car, LT1 Spyder Concept, ASC Sting Ray III, and Corvette SS. Two raffle draws raise US$700,000 for the National Corvette Museum.
  • 2003 - The United States National "Do Not Call Registry" is formed to combat unwanted telemarketing calls and administered by the Federal Trade Commission, enrolling almost three-quarters of a million phone numbers on its first day.
  • 2008 - Company founder Bill Gates leaves his full-time executive role at Microsoft, to focus on his philanthropic organization, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
  • 2022 - In San Antonio, Texas, USA, an abandoned truck is found to contain 46 dead people (7 more die later), smuggled in from Mexico.
