  • 1787 - US Congress establishes Northwest Territory (excludes slavery).
  • 1787 - Ordinance of 1787: a territory can become three to five states at 60,000 population.
  • 1832 - Henry Rowe Schoolcraft discovers the source of the Mississippi River.
  • 1836 - US patent #1 (after 9,957 unnumbered patents), for locomotive wheels.
  • 1854 - US forces shell and burn San Juan del Norte, Nicaragua.
  • 1863 - Anti-draft mobs lynch blacks in New York City; about 1,000 die.
  • 1865 - Horace Greeley advises his American readers to "Go west young man".
  • 1866 - Federal legislation imposes 10 percent tax on state bank note circulation.
  • 1868 - Oscar J Dunn, former slave, installed as lieutenant governor of Louisiana.
  • 1919 - Race riots in Longview and Gregg counties, Texas, USA.
  • 1923 - The Hollywood Sign (reading "Hollywoodland") is officially dedicated in Los Angeles, California.
  • 1936 - A Midwestern U.S. heat wave sets the all-time highest temperature records for Wisconsin (46 C), Michigan (44 C), and Indiana (47 C).
  • 1938 - First paid television theatre, in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. 200 spectators pay 25 cents to witness a variety show with dancing and song, lasting 45 minutes. The acts are performed on a floor above the theatre and transmitted downstairs by TV.
  • 1960 - US Democratic National convention nominates Senator John F Kennedy for president.
  • 1971 - The CBS TV network airs the last Hee Haw TV show in the USA.
  • 1975 - 8.5 inches (21.6 cm) of rainfall in Dover, Delaware (US state record).
  • 1977 - New York City experiences 25-hour black-out.
  • 1978 - Lee Iacocca fired as Ford Motor President by chairman Henry Ford II.
  • 1985 - U.S. Vice President George H.W. Bush serves as Acting President for eight hours, while President Ronald W. Reagan undergoes colon cancer surgery.
  • 1985 - Live Aid rock concert is staged in London, Philadelphia, Moscow, and Sydney. An estimated 1.5 billion television viewers in 169 countries watch 16 hours of performances by 180 pop musicians. Over US$110 million (£50 million) is raised for the Band Aid Trust, for African famine relief efforts.
  • 1986 - In the California - Mexico border region, a magnitude 5.3 earthquake occurs.
  • 1995 - Dozens of cities in the USA, most notably Chicago and Milwaukee, set all-time record high temperatures. Hundreds of people in these and other cities die as the heat wave reaches its peak.
  • 2008 - US Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson unveils an emergency plan to save Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, mortgage holders of US$5.2 trillion.

  • 1954 - Birth of Louise Mandrell in Corpus Christi, Texas, USA; country singer (Mandrell Sisters).
  • 1963 - Birth of Bobby Rock in Houston, Texas, USA; rock drummer (Nelson - "Love and Affection").
  • 1970 - Birth of Steven J Brown in Hackensack, New Jersey, USA; guitarist (Trixter - "Give It To Me Good").

  • 1961 - Arnold Schoenberg, Austrian-US composer (Second Quartet), dies at age 86.
  • 1984 - Death of Philippe Wynne of a heart attack while on stage in Oakland, California, USA; singer (The Spinners, "I'll Be Around", "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love", "Then Came You").
  • 2010 - George Steinbrenner, New York Yankees owner (1973-), dies at age 80 in Tampa, Florida, after a heart attack.
