Over US$110 million (£50 million) is raised for the Band Aid Trust, for African famine relief efforts.
- 1986 - In the California - Mexico border region, a magnitude 5.3 earthquake occurs.
- 1995 - Dozens of cities in the USA, most notably Chicago and Milwaukee, set all-time record high temperatures. Hundreds of people in these and other cities die as the heat wave reaches its peak.
