  • 1982 - In New York City, the Reverend Sun Myung Moon is sentenced to 18 months in prison and fined $25,000 for tax fraud and conspiracy to obstruct justice.
  • 1982 - George P. Shultz begins term as US Secretary of State.
  • 1985 - F-86 Sabre sets world aircraft speed record of 1152 kph (716 mph).
  • 1986 - Dolly Parton's "Dollywood" amusement park opens in Tennessee.
  • 1990 - New York City's Empire State Building catches fire; no fatalities.
  • 1992 - Independent U.S. presidential candidate H. Ross Perot drops out of the race, saying that the Democratic Party has 'revitalized itself'.
  • 1992 - Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton is nominated for U.S. President and Tennessee Senator Al Gore for Vice President, at the Democratic National Convention in New York City.
  • 1997 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average gains 63.17 to close at 8,038.88. It is the Dow's first close above 8,000. The Dow has doubled its value in 30 months.
  • 1999 - Off the coast of Martha's Vineyard, a plane piloted by John F. Kennedy Junior crashes, killing him and his wife Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and her sister Lauren Bessette.
  • 2007 - The US State Department imposes restrictions on importation of ancient coins "of Cypriot types" issued before 225 BCE.
