  • 1866 - Tennessee becomes first Confederate state re-admitted to USA.
  • 1870 - First trans-US rail service begins.
  • 1877 - First time US federal troops are used to combat strikers.
  • 1900 - Race riot in New Orleans, Louisiana; two white policemen are killed.
  • 1915 - Excursion ship Eastland capsizes in Lake Michigan, 852 die.
  • 1919 - Race riot in Washington DC (6 killed, 100 wounded).
  • 1929 - New York to San Francisco footrace ends (2.5 months) winner is 60-year-old Monteverde.
  • 1929 - President Herbert Hoover proclaims Kellogg-Briand Pact which renounces war.
  • 1936 - 118 degrees F (48 degrees C), Minden, Nebraska (state record hot).
  • 1936 - 121 degrees F (49 degrees C), near Alton, Kansas (state record hot).
  • 1950 - Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida begins operations with the launch of a Bumper rocket.
  • 1952 - 112 degrees F (44 degrees C), Louisville, Georgia (state record).
  • 1952 - US President Harry Truman settles 53-day steel strike.
  • 1959 - US Vice President Richard Nixon argues with Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, known as "Kitchen Debate".
  • 1961 - Beginning of a trend, a US commercial plane is hijacked to Cuba.
  • 1966 - The New Orleans Square area opens at Disneyland. It cost US$18 million, and occupies three acres. Walt Disney and the mayor of New Orleans, Louisiana, dedicate the area.
  • 1967 - Race riot in Cambridge, Maryland, USA.
  • 1969 - Apollo 11 splashes down safely in the Pacific Ocean.
  • 1974 - US Supreme Court unanimously rules President Richard Nixon must turn over Watergate tapes.
  • 1975 - Apollo 18 returns to Earth.
  • 1986 - San Francisco Federal jury convicts navy radioman Jerry Whitworth of espionage.
  • 1987 - American-flagged Kuwaiti oil tanker Brigeton strikes a mine in the Persian Gulf, 120 miles southeast of Kuwait, causing damage but no injuries.
  • 1998 - The US Senate votes 90 to 10 to make gambling on the Internet illegal.
  • 1998 - Russell Eugene Weston Junior bursts into the United States Capitol and opens fire, killing two police officers. He is later ruled incompetent to stand trial.
  • 2008 - Ford Motor Company of the USA posts a record US$8.7 billion quarterly loss, due to slumping truck and SUV operations.
  • 2009 - The US Senate confirms Rosa Gumataotao Rios to serve as 43rd US treasurer.
  • 2014 - The US Mint in Philadelphia surpasses its record for number of coins struck in a single day: 42.44 million.
