  • 1835 - The US government purchases the site for the Dahlonega Mint, for US$1050.
  • 1860 - American Canoe Association is founded at Lake George, New York.
  • 1863 - New York Governor Seymour asks US President Abraham Lincoln to suspend draft in New York.
  • 1863 - Saratoga Racetrack (New York) opens.
  • 1882 - US Congress passes first law restricting immigration.
  • 1914 - Cargo steamer S.S. Cristobal is first vessel to complete ocean-to-ocean transit of Panama Canal.
  • 1921 - First aerial cropdusting, on six-acre catalpa grove infested with leaf caterpillars, at Troy, Ohio. Two days later, found to be 99 percent effective.
  • 1955 - Automobile Association of America ends support of auto racing.
  • 1955 - Hurricane Connie begins pounding US for 11 days.
  • 1958 - American nuclear submarine USS Nautilus begins first crossing of Arctic Ocean under icecap.
  • 1970 - Hurricane "Celia" becomes most expensive Gulf storm in history.
  • 1975 - Louisiana Superdome is dedicated. The stadium cost $175 million to build.
  • 1977 - At the Warwick Hotel in New York City, Radio Shack (a division of Tandy Corporation) announces the TRS-80 microcomputer. It features Zilog Z80 processor, 4 kB RAM, 4 kB ROM, keyboard, black-and-white video display, and tape cassette for US$599.
  • 1981 - The American Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO) goes on strike.
  • 1990 - US announces commitment of Naval forces to Gulf regions.
  • 2004 - In the USA, the Statue of Liberty reopens after security improvements.
  • 2005 - The Federal Communications Commission and Department of Justice give their approval to the merger of communications companies Sprint and Nextel.
  • 2019 - A mass shooting at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas, United States, leaves 23 people dead and 23 others injured.
