  • 1862 - US Secretary of War authorizes General Rufus Saxton to arm 5,000 slaves.
  • 1864 - Petersburg Campaign - Battle of Ream's Station.
  • 1916 - US Congress establishes the National Park Service as part of the Department of the Interior.
  • 1921 - US signs peace treaty with Germany.
  • 1925 - Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters organizes (Harlem, New York).
  • 1943 - US forces overrun New Georgia in Solomon Islands.
  • 1950 - US President Harry Truman orders army to seize control of railroad to avert a strike.
  • 1967 - George Lincoln Rockwell, head of American Nazi Party, is assassinated.
  • 1983 - US and USSR sign US$10 billion grain pact.
  • 1985 - Disneyland in Anaheim, California, USA welcomes three-year old Brooks Arthur Charles Burr as the park's 250-millionth visitor.
  • 1991 - Student Linus Torvalds posts messages to a Usenet newsgroup comp.os.minix about the new operating system kernel he has been developing (Linux).
  • 2009 - U.S. President Barack Obama nominates Ben Bernanke to a second term as Federal Reserve chairman.
  • 2017 - (to August 30) Hurricane Harvey strikes the United States as a Category 4 hurricane, causing catastrophic damage to the Houston metropolitan area, mostly due to record-breaking floods. At least 108 deaths are recorded, and total damage reaches $125 billion, making Harvey the costliest natural disaster in United States history, tied with Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
