  • 1859 - First successful oil well drilled, near Titusville, Pennsylvania, USA.
  • 1927 - Parks College, America's oldest aviation school, opens.
  • 1928 - Sixteen die in New York City subway accident.
  • 1928 - The Pact of Paris (Kellogg-Briand Pact) is signed by the USA, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Poland. The countries condemn recourse to war, renouncing it as an instrument of national policy in relations with one another.
  • 1945 - US troops land in Japan after Japanese surrender.
  • 1950 - General Foods blacklists Jean Muir of Aldrich Family as a communist.
  • 1962 - Mariner 2 launched; first probe to fly by Venus.
  • 1966 - Race riot in Waukegan, Illinois, USA.
  • 1984 - US President Ronald Reagan announces the Teacher in Space project.
  • 1985 - 20th Space Shuttle Mission (51-I) - Discovery 6 - launched.
  • 1990 - 52 Americans arrive in Turkey from Iraq.
  • 2001 - Intel releases the 2-GHz Pentium 4 processor.
  • 2006 - Comair Flight 5191, carrying 50 people, crashes shortly after take-off from Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, Kentucky.
  • 2007 - United States Attorney General Alberto Gonzales announces his resignation, to be effective September 17.
  • 2008 - At the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado, Illinois senator Barack Obama is nominated as Democratic presidential nominee.
  • 2020 - Hurricane Laura makes landfall in Lake Charles, Louisiana with winds of 150 mph, making it the strongest hurricane to ever strike the state in terms of windspeed, tied with the 1856 Last Island Hurricane.

  • 1964 - Death of Gracie Allen of a heart attack at age 69; actor/comedienne (Burns and Allen Show on radio and TV).
  • 1990 - Death of Stevie Ray Vaughan when the helicopter he was traveling in collides with a ski slope; blues guitarist. The accident also claims three members of Eric Clapton's entourage.
