  • 1869 - Mine fire kills 179 at Avondale, Pennsylvania, USA.
  • 1876 - Race riot in Charleston, South Carolina.
  • 1876 - Southern Pacific rail line from Los Angeles to San Francisco is completed.
  • 1901 - President William McKinley is shot by Leon Czologosz in Buffalo, New York (dies 8 days later).
  • 1943 - "Congressional Limited" train derails near Frankfort, Pennsylvania, USA, kills 79.
  • 1961 - In Bells, Texas, USA a meteorite strikes the roof of a house.
  • 1966 - Race riot in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
  • 1973 - New York Times reports almost all Superfecta harness racing run at Yonkers, Roosevelt and Monticello from January to March of 1973 were fixed.
  • 1985 - Midwest Express Airlines Flight 105, a Douglas DC-9, crashes just after takeoff from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, killing 31.
  • 2000 - The last wholly Swedish-owned arms manufacturer, Bofors, is sold to American arms manufacturer United Defense.
  • 2001 - The United States Justice Department announces that it no longer seeks to break-up software maker Microsoft, and will instead seek a lesser antitrust penalty.
  • 2009 - In Beverly Hills, California, Ira & Larry Goldberg, Auctioneers, conduct the auction of part one of the Dan Holmes collection of US large cents. Some highlights:

    • 1793 Liberty Cap, Wreath cent, bisected obverse, AU-55 / EF-45 PCGS: US$506,000;
    • 1795 Liberty Cap, Reeded Edge cent, VG-10 PCGS, finest of seven known: US$1,265,000; first US large cent to sell for over $1 million;

  • 2017 - (to September 10) The Caribbean and United States are struck by Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 hurricane that is the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic basin outside the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. The storm causes at least 146 deaths and $64.2 billion in damage.
