  • 1788 - New York City becomes capital of the United States.
  • 1789 - First loan to US Government (from New York City banks).
  • 1814 - Start of two-day bombardment of Fort McHenry (USA) by British naval forces.
  • 1841 - Walter Froward takes office as US Treasury Secretary.
  • 1867 - General E R S Canby orders South Carolina courts to impanel blacks jurors.
  • 1930 - A fireball plunges into the sea near Eureka, California.
  • 1956 - In the USA, IBM introduces the IBM 350 Disk File, the first hard drive, as part of the IBM RAMAC 305 computer. The drive features fifty double-sided 24-inch diameter platters, served by one arm and one read/write head. Capacity is about 5MB, and transfer rate is 8800 characters per second.
  • 1960 - The U.S. Federal Communications Commission bans the practice of record companies paying disc jockeys to play certain records.
  • 1961 - Unmanned Mercury-Atlas 4 launched into Earth orbit.
  • 1970 - IBM announces System 370 computer.
  • 1971 - Nine hostages and 28 prisoners die in take-over at Attica State Prison.
  • 1973 - US Congress passes and sends a bill to President Richard Nixon to lift football's blackout.
  • 1982 - Public Law 97-358 reduces volume of United States notes in circulation to $300,000,000.
  • 1983 - US mint strikes first gold coin in 50 years (Olympic Eagle).
  • 1986 - Kellye Cash (Miss Tennessee) crowned Miss America.
  • 1993 - Palistinian Liberation Organization leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin shake hands in Washington D.C., after signing the Oslo peace accord.
  • 1994 - US President Bill Clinton signs the Assault Weapons Ban, which bans the manufacture of new weapons with certain features for a period of ten years.
  • 2001 - Due the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Major League Baseball postpones all games through September 17.
  • 2003 - Indiana Governor Frank O'Bannon dies after suffering a stroke on September 8 in Chicago, Illinois. Joe Kernan, the Lieutenant Governor, is sworn in as Indiana's 48th Governor.
  • 2004 - The U.S. Assault Weapons Ban expires.
  • 2008 - Hurricane Ike hits Galveston, Texas, as Category 2, causing estimated damage of US$27 billion, 3rd costliest in US history.
  • 2017 - The International Olympic Committee awards Paris, France and Los Angeles, California the right to host the 2024 and 2028 Summer Olympics, respectively.
