- 1960 - The U.S. Federal Communications Commission bans the practice of record companies paying disc jockeys to play certain records.

- 2008 - Hurricane Ike hits Galveston, Texas, as Category 2, causing estimated damage of US$27 billion, 3rd costliest in US history.
