  • 1778 - At Fort Pitt, the USA signs a treaty with the Lenape tribe, allowing American troops to pass through the lands inhabited by the Lenape to attack British troops at a Detroit fort.
  • 1787 - The United States Constitution is signed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
  • 1862 - Battle of Sharpsburg (Antietam) - bloodiest day of the war between the USA and CSA, 22,000 killed and wounded on both sides.
  • 1868 - The currency production bureau of the federal government becomes officially called the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
  • 1873 - Nineteen students attend opening class at Ohio State University.
  • 1911 - First US transcontinental airplane flight, New York to Pasadena in 82 hours 4 min.
  • 1920 - The American Pro Football Association is organized in Canton, Ohio, USA.
  • 1928 - Hurricane hits Lake Okeechobee, Florida, USA drowning 1,800-2500.
  • 1937 - The head of Abraham Lincoln on Mount Rushmore is dedicated in Black Hills, South Dakota.
  • 1944 - British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery launches Operation Market Garden, with 14 divisions. Nearly 2000 American CG-4A and 700 British Horga and Hamilcar gliders are launched from southern England, carrying the British 2nd Army and the US 101st Airborne Division. They land along 60 miles of road in Holland, leading into Germany. The objective is to capture bridges at Grave, Nijmegen, and Arnhem over the Rhine river.
  • 1946 - US armed forces adopt military payment certificates for use as the sole medium of exchange in US army establishments of certain countries in Europe, Mediterranean, and Pacific areas.
  • 1947 - James Forrestal sworn in as first US secretary of defense.
  • 1952 - In the USA, "I am an American Day" and "Constitution Day" renamed "Citizenship Day".
  • 1957 - Scott Crossfield takes X-15 up for first powered flight.
  • 1959 - Transit 1A, first navigational satellite launched; failed to orbit.
  • 1960 - Cuba nationalizes American-owned banks.
  • 1962 - US space officials announce selection of nine new astronauts.
  • 1965 - Groundbreaking ceremonies are held for construction of a new mint building in Philadelphia.
  • 1967 - Mount Washington cog railway train derails, kills 8 (New Hampshire).
  • 1975 - Rollout of first space shuttle orbiter Enterprise (OV-101).
  • 1976 - NASA publicly unveils space shuttle Enterprise in Palmdale, California.
  • 1978 - Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, and US President Jimmy Carter sign the Camp David accord.
  • 1983 - Vanessa Lynn Williams is crowned Miss America, in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
  • 1986 - US Senate confirms William Rehnquist as 16th chief justice.
  • 1987 - At a small rally in Harlem, televangelist Marion Robertson announces his candidacy for the 1988 Republican presidential nomination.
  • 1990 - Newspaper Guild votes 242-35 to keep New York Post publishing.
  • 2001 - The New York Stock Exchange reopens following the terrorist attacks in New York.
  • 2001 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average closes for the day down 684.81 points (7.1 percent), the second largest one-day point drop.
  • 2011 - Occupy Wall Street protests begin in the United States. This develops into the Occupy movement which spreads to 82 countries by October.

  • 1996 - Death of Spiro Agnew, American Vice President (born 1918).
  • 1998 - Death of Chet Hoff at the age of 107 in Daytona Beach, Florida. Hoff played for the New York Highlanders in 1911-13 and St. Louis Browns in 1915.
  • 2006 - Death of Patricia Kennedy Lawford, American socialite, sister of John F. Kennedy (born 1924).
  • 2006 - Death of Dorothy C. Stratton, Director of the United States Coast Guard Women's Reserve (born 1899).
