  • 1980 - Titan II missile explosion (Damascus, Arkansas).
  • 1981 - Simon and Garfunkel perform The Concert in Central Park, a free concert in New York in front of approximately a half million people.
  • 1985 - Allied Chemical (Allied Corp.) changes its company name to Allied-Signal Incorp.
  • 1986 - US Federal health officals announce AZT will be available to AIDS patients.
  • 1989 - Chase Manhattan Discovery Center at Brooklyn Botanic Garden opens.
  • 1994 - American troops stage a bloodless invasion of Haiti in order to restore the legitimate elected leader, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, to power.
  • 2001 - In the light of the New York attack by terrorists the German Bundestag votes full support and solidarity with the USA, including military support.
  • 2001 - Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf announces decision to support US-led intervention against Taliban in Afghanistan, mainly to keep US from allying with India.
  • 2010 - The oil well in the Gulf of Mexico is finally sealed, after leaking about 4.9 million barrels of oil since April 20.
  • 2017 - (to September 20) Hurricane Maria makes landfall on Dominica as a Category 5 hurricane, and Puerto Rico as a Category 4 hurricane. Maria causes at least 112 deaths and damages estimated in excess of US$91.6 billion.
