  • 1890 - Rock Creek Park is established as a National Park in the District of Columbia.
  • 1919 - US Democratic National Committee votes to admit women.
  • 1937 - First Santa Claus school opens (Albion, New York).
  • 1940 - Black leaders protest discrimination in US armed forces.
  • 1940 - In Berlin, Germany, Japanese premier Prince Fumimaro Konoye and Italian and German officials sign the Tripartite Pact defensive alliance. Each nation pledges mutual support in the event of attack by a power not presently involved in the European or Chinese-Japanese conflict. The intent is to keep the United States out of the war.
  • 1941 - First World War II liberty ship, freighter Patrick Henry, launched by US.
  • 1954 - School integration begins in Washington DC and Baltimore, Maryland, public schools.
  • 1956 - Milburn Apt in X-2 rocket plane reaches 3370 kph, but dies in crash.
  • 1962 - US sells Hawk anti-aircraft missiles to Israel.
  • 1963 - At 10:59 AM the census clock records US population at 190,000,000.
  • 1964 - Warren Commission releases report finding Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in assassinating President John F. Kennedy.
  • 1979 - US Congress' final approval to create Department of Education.
  • 1985 - Hurricane Gloria's 130 MPH wind hits the Atlantic coast of the USA.
  • 1986 - US Senate joins House of Representatives voting for sweeping tax reforms.
  • 1988 - US Senate votes for major federal tax code changes.
  • 1989 - Sony purchases Columbia Pictures for US$3.4 billion cash.
  • 1990 - A gunman holds 33 people (killing 1) hostage in Berkley, California.
  • 1990 - US Senate Judiciary committee approves David Souter's Supreme Court nomination.
  • 1991 - US President George H.W. Bush decides to end full-time B-52 bombers alert.
  • 1994 - The Compact of Free Association between the USA and Palau becomes effective.
  • 2006 - An armed suspect holds six female students as hostages in Platte Canyon High School located in Bailey, Colorado. One hostage is fatally wounded as the gunman kills himself.
