  • Disney Cruise Line announces Cantieri Navali Italiani S.p.A. of Italy is awarded the contract to build the first Disney cruise ship. [1233]

  • The keel of the Disney Magic cruise ship is laid. [1233]

1997

April 12
  • The bow half of the Disney Magic cruise ship leaves drydock of Fincontieri shipyard in Ancona, Italy, to meet with the stern section 100 miles away in Marghera. [1233]
April 15
  • Joining of the two halves of the Disney Magic cruise ship begins, with variance less than 1 mm. [1233]
April 18
  • Joining of the two halves of the Disney Magic cruise ship is complete. [1233]
May 13
  • The complete hull of the Disney Magic cruise ship floats for the first time. [1233]
June
  • The Disney Cruise Line's first vessel, Disney Magic, first floats out of its shipyards in Italy. [225.34]

February 14
  • The first Disney Cruise Line wedding occurs on Castaway Cay. [1232]

  • The one hundredth sailing of the Disney Magic cruise ship is celebrated. [1232]
July 14
  • The Disney Wonder cruise ship, second of the Disney Cruise line, departs from Venice, Italy. [1232]
August 2
  • The Disney Wonder cruise ship arrives at Port Canaveral, Florida, from Italy, where it was built. [249.28] [1232]

August 12
  • The Disney Cruise Line's ship Disney Magic begins a new seven-day cruise to the eastern Caribbean. [257.24]

  • The Disney Cruise Line celebrates its one millionth guest family. [1232]

2005

July 16
  • Disney hosts a fund-raising event aboard the Disney Magic cruise ship in the Port of San Pedro, California, with special events throughout the ship for the over 1000 guests. US$1.04 million is raised and donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and The Disney Company presents a second check for US$1 million. [914.13] [1259.1]

  • The Disney Cruise Line launches the "Castaway Ray's Stingray Adventure" excursion on Castaway Cay island. [1259.2]
October
  • While the Disney Magic cruise ship is in dry dock, Disney Cruise Line Marine and Technical Operations installs a 16-foot by 25-foot LED screen at the forward funnel above the Goofy's Family Pool stage. The name of the screen is "Ariel View Television". [1263.2]

2006

June 24
  • The prop ship the Flying Dutchman from the Pirates of the Caribbean films is installed offshore at Castaway Cay island. [1264.2]
September 7
  • The Disney Wonder embarks on Disney Cruise Line's first Southern Caribbean voyages, visiting St. Kitts and Barbados. [1265.1]
October 1
  • The Disney Wonder cruise ship enters dry dock. [1265.2]

2007

February 22
  • Disney Cruise Line announces two new cruise ships will be built, scheduled to enter service in 2011 and 2012. The new 122,000 gross ton ships will be two decks taller than the existing Disney ships, and will offer 1250 staterooms each. The ships are to be built at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany.   • Meyer Werft and Disney Cruise Line sign a contract to build two new ships. [1240]
May 12
  • The Disney Magic cruise ship departs from Port Canaveral, Florida for a 14-day eastbound repositioning cruise to Barcelona, Spain, where it will begin Disney Cruise Line's first Mediterranean cruises. [1261.1]
May 26
  • The Disney Wonder cruise ship begins Disney Cruise Line's first 11-night Mediterranean sailings from Barcelona, Spain. [1261.4]

2009

March 2
  • Disney Cruise Line begins construction on two new ships, with a steel cutting ceremony at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. [1240]
March 11
  • At the 2009 Annual Meeting of Shareholders of The Walt Disney Company, Disney announces the names of the company's two new cruise ships: Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. Each ship will have 1,250 staterooms and will each be 128,000 tons. [1240] [1275]
August 26
  • At the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, Disney Cruise Line celebrates the keel laying of the Disney Dream cruise ship (1250 staterooms, 128,000 gross tons), scheduled to sail in 2011. [1240] [1257.42]

  • The Walt Disney Company announces enhancements to its Castaway Cay private island in the Bahamas, extending the Castaway Family Beach by more than 700 feet, with a new family lunch buffet location, new beverage bar, new beach rental location, new merchandise location, new 2400 square-foot water feature called Pelican Plunge, new 2400 square-foot water play area on land called Spring-a-Leak, new 1200 square-foot soft wet deck for youngsters, 20 new private beach cabanas, new Hide Out area for teens, new In Da Shade Game Pavilion, and three new massage cabanas at Serenity Bay Beach.   • Disney Cruise Line announces it will offer Alaskan cruises during a four-month season of seven-night sailings aboard the Disney Wonder in summer 2011, departing out of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. [1240]

  • The Disney Cruise Line announces the upcoming cruise ship Disney Dream will include the world's first shipboard water coaster ride, the Aquaduck; inside cabins will include a Virtual Porthole displaying live ocean-view video from cameras placed on the exterior of the ship, and in youth areas a 103-inch video screen will feature Crush and Stitch characters in real-time conversation with kids.   • The Disney Cruise Line begins accepting bookings for the Disney Dream cruise line. [1240]
November 26
  • In New York City, the 83rd annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade includes the debut of the "Sailor Mickey Balloon", about 61 feet high, filled with 14,000 cubic feet of helium. The balloon promotes the Disney Cruise Line. [1240]

  • The live musical show Villains Tonight! premieres aboard the Disney Magic. [1240]

  • Disney Cruise Line's Disney Magic cruise ship makes its maiden call at the Valletta Waterfront, Malta. [1240]
