  • (approximate date) A meteorite falls in North America (modern day Alberta, Canada), shattering into dozens of pieces (74+ found), leaving a small crater 36 metres wide and 6 metres deep. [521]

  • In Chang-chou, China, a daytime fireball and meteorite fall is observed. [521]

1348

January 25
  • In Carinthia (Austria - northern Italy), "fire fell from heaven", an earthquake destroys 16 cities, killing over 40,000. [1] [53] [521]

  • Chinese record the fall of a "large star" in Ho-t-ao, injuring several soldiers. [521]

1430

June
  • In (what is now modern day) New Zealand, a huge comet strikes the ocean less than a hundred miles from the Chinese fleet of Zhou Man, destroying at least 173 ships, by a mega-tsunami. Observed by Chinese and Mayan astronomers as a comet in Canis Minor for 26 days. [521]

February 3
  • Chinese record stones raining from the sky in Ch'ing-yang, Shansi, killing over 10,000 people. [521]

1492

  • Christopher Columbus reports "a marvelous branch of fire" that falls into the sea as he crosses the Atlantic. [521]
November 7
  • The Ensisheim Meteorite, the oldest meteorite (about 280 pounds) with a known date of impact, strikes Earth around noon in a wheat field outside the village of Ensisheim, Alsace (France). [5] [521] [526.110] [1427.10] (November 16 [523.19])

September 4
  • A great fireball appears over Crema in Lombardy, Italy, followed by huge shower of meteorites. One meteorite kills a monk, several birds, and a sheep. [523.19] (September 14 [521])

May
  • In Nantan, China, many meteorites fall to the ground. When recovered in 1958, they are found to be 92 percent iron, weighing 150-1500kg. [521]

  • In Punjab, India, reports of "hot iron" falling from the sky, burning grass. [521]

May 29
  • (approximate date) Reports of a "second sun" (an incoming meteor?) in Magdeburg area (Germany). [521]

1639

  • In China, a stone (meteorite) falls in a market, killing dozens of people, destroying dozens of houses. [521]

1654

  • In Milano, Italy, a monk is reported killed by a meteorite. [521]

1661

August 9
  • In China, a meteorite smashes through the roof of a house. No one is injured. [521]

1670

November 7
  • In China, a meteorite breaks the roof beam of a house. [521]

  • In Chamblan, France, a house is struck and burned by a meteorite. [521]

July
  • A 2kg stony meteorite falls near Albaneto in the Romagna area of Italy. [523.20]

July 29
  • A meteor is viewed in the sky at Crespi (now Crepy), France, creating a large booming noise, and shaking the earth on impact. [523.25]

July 24
  • A meteorite falls in Barbotan and Agen, Gascony, France, crushing a cottage, killing a farmer and some cattle. [521]

1794

  • The Siena stone meteorite (type LL5) falls in Tuscany, Italy. [523.20] [526.116]
  • German physicist Ernst Florens Friedrich Chladni publishes a book about meteorites, speculating (correctly) that iron meteorites had come from break-up of larger masses in outer space, and are remnants of cosmic matter from formation of Solar System. [523.20] [526.115]

  • A 25kg stone meteorite (type L6) falls near Wold Cottage, Yorkshire, England. [523.20] [526.116]

1796

  • The Bjelajaa Zerkov stone meteorite (type H6) falls in Kiev Province, Ukraine. [523.20]

1798

  • The Salles stone meteorite (type H6) falls in Rhone, France. [523.20]
  • The Benares stone meteorite (type LL4) falls in Uttar Pradesh, India. [523.20]

  • A meteorite lands in Benares, India, striking a building. [521]

1801

October 30
  • A meteorite strikes a house near Horringer-mill, Suffolk, England, burning it and a stable to the ground. [521]

1802

  • English chemist Edward Charles Howard publishes analysis of several meteorites, providing first chemical link between stony and iron meteorites that had fallen at different times and in different places. [523.21]

1803

April 26
  • A large shower of several thousand stony meteorites occurs near town of L'Aigle in Northern France. Physicist Jean-Baptiste Biot writes official report for French Ministry of Interior, that establishes acceptance that stones sometimes do fall to Earth. [1] [523.21] [526.117]

July
  • In Shahbad, India, a large meteor falls, burning five villages. [521]

1811

December 16
  • New Madrid, Missouri is the epicenter of a massive earthquake 7.2-8.1 magnitude, felt as far away as New York and Florida. Likely cause is overhead explosion of comet fragments, as the comet had been observed earlier. (By May 1812, one resident of Kentucky recorded 2000 separate tremors.)   • The Chassigny meteorite falls in France. (It is later shown to be from Mars.) [523.106]

  • The Juvinas basaltic meteorite falls in France. [523.100]

November 10
  • A meteorite strikes a house in Wasenda, Japan. [521]

  • The Renazzo chondrite meteorite (type CR) falls in Italy. [523.92]

January 16
  • A meteorite falls in Oriang, India, killing one man and injuring one woman. [521]

1827

February 27
  • In Mhow, India, a meteorite strikes a man on the arm, and breaks a tree. [521]

1835

November 13
  • In Belley, Dept. de l'Ain, France, a fireball from space sets fire to a barn. [521]

1836

December 11
  • In Macaé, Brazil, a falling meteorite damages several homes and kills several oxen. [521]

1841

  • A falling meteorite causes a fire in Chiloe Archipel, Chile. [521]

1845

May 6
  • In Ch'ang-shou, Szechwan, China, a stone meteorite damages more than 100 tombs. [521]

1846

August 14
  • The Cape Girardeau meteorite, a 2.3kg chondrite-type meteorite, strikes near the town of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, USA. [5]

July 14
  • In Braunau, Bohemia, a 37-pound iron meteorite smashes through the roof of a house. [521]

1850

October 17
  • In Szu-mao, China, a meteorite falls through the roof of a house. [521]

1858

December 9
  • In Ausson, France, a building is hit by a meteorite. [521]

1860

May 1
  • In New Concord, Ohio, a colt is struck and killed by a meteorite. [521]

1864

  • The Orgueil carbonaceous chondrite meteorite (type CI1) falls in France. [523.90]

1865

  • The Shergotty meteorite falls in India. (It is later shown to be from Mars.) [523.106]

1868

January 30
  • A shower of an estimated 100,000 stony meteorites totalling about 2 tons occurs at Pultusk, Poland. Largest known quantity of meteorites in one shower. [523.33]

  • In Pillistfer, Estonia, a building is struck by a falling meteorite. [521]

May 1
  • A colt is reported killed by a meteorite near New Concord, Ohio. [1]

  • In Chin-kuei Shan and Ming-tung Li, China, huge stones fall from the sky, crushing a cottage, killing one child. [521]

February 16
  • In Judesegeri, India, a water tank is struck by a meteorite. [521]

1877

January 3
  • In Warrenton, Missouri, a meteorite falls to the ground; no damage or injuries. [521]
January 21
  • In De Cewsville, Ontario, a meteorite falls to the ground; no damage or injuries. [521]

1879

January 31
  • In Dun-le-Poelier, France, a farmer is reported killed by a meteorite. [521]
May 10
  • Meteor falls near Estherville, Iowa, USA. [1]
November 12
  • In Huan-hsiang, China, a rain of stones is reported; many houses damaged. [521]

1881

November 19
  • In Grosliebenthal, Russia, a man is reported injured by a meteorite. [521]

1885

February 24
  • In the North Pacific, the crew of the barque Innerwich en route from Japan to Vancouver, witnesses the sky turning fiery red, falling into the sea 50 yards away with a blast and hissing sound. Then a wave of white foam passes under the ship. [521]
November 27
  • Earliest photograph of a meteor shower is made. [1]

1886

  • The Novo-Urei ureilite meteorite falls in Russia. [523.103]

1887

March 19
  • Crew of the Dutch barque J.P.A. in the North Atlantic witness two fireballs in the dark evening sky, one falling close to the ship with a roar, causing waves an a hot suffocating atmosphere, and then depositing solid lumps of ice on the deck. [521]

1889

  • The Mighei chondrite meteorite (type CM2) falls in Ukraine. [523.90]

1890

  • The Kakangari meteorite falls in India. [523.93]

1893

November 22
  • In Zabrodii, Russia, a building is struck by a meteorite. [521]

1897

March 11
  • In New Martinsville, West Virginia, USA, a man is reported struck by a meteorite, a horse killed, and walls pierced. [521]
