January
  • A 150-tonne meteoroid crosses the skies over Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada, and explodes over Tagish Lake south of the city. [521]
  • Ice chunks (megacryometeors) weighing up to 6.6 pounds rain down on the Iberian peninsula of Spain over ten days, damaging cars and an industrial storage facility. [521]
January 18
  • The Tagish Lake meteorite impacts the Earth. [21]
December 5
  • The Fireball Network of cameras in Europe records a fireball of estimated weight 270kg over Germany. [523.46]

2001

July 25
  • (to September 23) Over Kerala, India, rain sporadically falls with colors red, yellow, green, and black, the result of the atmospheric disintegration of a comet. [521]

2002

June 6
  • An asteroid or comet estimated at 5-10 metres in diameter explodes over the Mediterranean Sea between Greece and Libya with an estimated force slightly more powerful than the Nagasaki atomic bomb. [5] [23] [521]
September 24
  • A large fireball falls to Earth near Bodaibo, Siberia, Russia, resulting in a crater surrounded by burnt forest. [521] (September 25 [5])

2003

November
  • Dallas Abbott and her team announce they had found where a comet crashed in 1430, between Campbell Island and New Zealand South Island. [521]

2004

June 12
  • A 1.3kg chondrite type meteorite (estimated to be four billion years old) strikes a house in Ellerslie, New Zealand, causing serious damage but no injuries. [5] [25] [521]
September 3
  • A small asteroid explodes in the stratosphere above Antarctica depositing micron-sized dust particles. [521]
September 29
  • Asteroid 4179 Toutatis crosses path of Earth within 1.5 million km. [523.184]

2005

August 22
  • A 4.1-kg (9-pound) meteorite crashes into the Dotito area of Zambezi Escarpment in Zimbabwe, leaving a 15-cm (6-inch) crater. [26]

2006

February 1
  • In Calgary, Alberta, Canada, an exceptionally bright meteor is seen streaking across the sky, lasting for several seconds before breaking up into fragments. It is estimated that remnants of the meteorite land about 400 km south of Calgary, in Montana, USA. [521]
  • A meteor falls in a field in Singpara village, Bangladesh; a hot, lead-like black material three feet below the earth is dug up, weighing 2.5kg. [521]
February 17
  • A ball of fire is reported falling in the area of Stirling Castle in Scotland. [521]

  • A second ball of fire is reported falling in the area of Stirling Castle in Scotland. [521]

  • A large meteor shower crosses over El Paso, Texas, USA. [521]
June 2
  • A fireball is reported crossing Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota and Canada, estimated to be 20 miles above the Earth's surface. A sonic boom is heard over Minnesota. [521]

  • A meteor show is observed in various places in Pennsylvania, USA. [521]
July 10
  • An ice ball the size of a microwave oven lands in Douglasdale, South Africa, creating a small crater on the pavement where it lands. [521]
July 14
  • A meteor explodes over the Oslo Fjord, Norway, depositing numerous meteorites over the area. [521]
September 12
  • A meteor streaks across the sky in New Zealand, creating a sonic boom at about 40,000kph, turning into a fireball and depositing rocks on the ground. [521]
October 10
  • An arc of blazing light is witnessed crossing the sky in Germany, resulting in a fire destroying a cottage in Siegburg, near Bonn, Germany and injuring a 77-year-old man. [521]

January 4
  • A dense metallic meteorite about 1-inch in diameter crashes through the roof of a house in eastern New Jersey, USA. [521]
January 10
  • A meteorite falls in the Altai Territory in southern Siberia, Russia. [521]

  • In Tampa, Florida, USA a 200-pound chunk of ice streaks through the sky and lands in the back seat of a Ford Mustang. [521]
January 24
  • In Giles County, Virginian, USA a meteor sighting is followed by a thundering tremor. [521]
January 30
  • In Turkey, a meteorite flashes across the sky and lands in Yesilkent. [521]
February 4
  • Meteors and fireballs are reported in several states in the Midwestern USA. [521]
February 15
  • In Ohio, USA, a meteor streaks across the sky, creating a sonic boom. [521]
February 22
  • In Banchola village, Rajasthan, India, three people are killed and four injured when a meteorite falls from the sky and hits them. [521]
February 23
  • A 4.2kg 20cm diameter meteorite falls on a beach in Rio Hato, Panama. [521]
March 15
  • A fireball lands in a farmer's field in Holland Landing, Ontario, Canada. [521]
March 29
  • Pilots of a Chilean passenger jet approaching the airport at Auckland, New Zealand report seeing flaming debris fall past their aircraft several kilometres away, falling at the speed of sound. [521]
May 10
  • A fireball falls across the centre of Spain, with sightings in Cuenca, Toledo, Ciudad Real and Valladolid. [521]
May 14
  • A meteor likely causes a 2.1-magnitude earthquake in Hubbardton, Vermont, USA. [521]
May 26
  • In Woburn, Massachusetts, USA a meteorite punches a hole through a warehouse roof. [521]
June 7
  • A large meteorite strikes a mountainside in Reisadalem in northern Norway, landing with an impact comparable to the atomic bomb used at Hiroshima. [521]
June 10
  • Two large meteoroids enter the atmosphere over Sri Lanka, breaking into smaller pieces and landing in several areas. [521]
July 6
  • A meteor breaks apart in the lower atmosphere with a trio of fericious explosions, and rains stones on Cali, Colombia. [521]
July 26
  • A 50-pound chunk of white ice crashes through the roof of a house, in Dubuque, Iowa, USA. Other large chunks of ice fall from the clear sky, tearing through nearby trees. [521]
August 1
  • An 8-cm diameter meteorite falls in a field in Hotipur village, India. [521]
August 11
  • A likely meteor shower is reported over Sonora, California. [521]
September 15
  • A stony meteorite estimated with 1m diameter travelling at 24,000 km/h plows into a dry riverbed near Lake Titicaca in Carancas in the Puno region of Peru. [57] [521]
October 3
  • Hundreds of witnesses report seeing a flaming ball cross the skies of Minnesota, accompanied by a sonic boom, and a rain of debris. [521]

2008

February 19
  • A fireball and sonic boom are reported in parts of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and British Columbia. [521]
March 5
  • A large meteor fireball over southern Ontario, Canada is captured on video by The Physics and Astronomy Department at Western. [521]
March 8
  • A meteorite (black, 3kg, 40cm diameter) falls in a thunderous crash in Yaka, Turkey. [521]
March 10
  • Great balls of fire are seen falling from the sky over Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. [521]
April 6
  • In Argentina, a meteor is witnessed falling in flames of changing colors, crashing in Entre Rios Province. [521]
April 16
  • A fireball with fluctuating colors is observed over Entre Ríos, Argentina. Vast brush fires reported the following day in Buenos Aires and Entre Ríos may have been caused by the meteor exploding. [521]
October 7
  • The meteoroid 2008 TC3 impacts Earth, becoming the first such object to be discovered prior to impact. [310]
November 20
  • An estimated 10-tonne object explodes in the atmosphere over Canadian provinces Alberta and Saskatchewan, landing south of Lone Rock, Saskatchewan. Within weeks, 130 stony meteorites (type H4), totalling 40 kg are recovered. [310] [561.9]

2009

August 11
  • (to August 13) The Perseid meteor showers peak at 200 observations per hour. [562.9]

2013

February 15
  • A meteor explodes over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk, injuring 1,491 people and damaging over 4,300 buildings. It is the most powerful meteor to strike Earth's atmosphere in over a century. [1208]
