  • The Royal Canadian Mint unveils the designs for twelve year 2000 25c coins, depicting Canada's strengths for the future. A set in nickel sells for $24.95. [513.1]
  • The Royal Canadian Mint launches the January 25c nickel coin, entitled Pride, by Donald Warkentin. [513.1]
January 22
  • The Canadian Association of Numismatic Dealers hold their annual winter show in Hamilton, Ontario. A 1905 25c coin graded MS-65 PQ by ICCS sells for $29,700. [529.27]

  • In Windsor, Ontario, the Royal Canadian Mint launches the February 25c nickel coin, entitled Ingenuity, by John Jaciw. [515.1]

  • At the Canadian Space Agency in Montreal, the Royal Canadian Mint launches the March 25c Millenium coin, entitled Achievement, designed by Daryl Ann Dorosz. [530.1]

  • The Royal Canadian Mint launches the April Millenium 25c coin, entitled Health, designed by Arny Wassef. [528.1]

  • Production begins on new coins for circulation made of nickel-copper-nickel plated on steel cores. Denominations include 5c, 10c, 25c, 50c. Coins have a 'P' under the Queen's head to mark their difference from pure nickel coins. [526.33]

  • In Winnipeg, the Mint's new coin plating facility is officially opened. [526.33] [647.29]

  • In Pickering, Ontario, the Royal Canadian Mint launches the Natural Legacy Millenium 25c coin for circulation, designed by Randy Trantau. [526.1]

  • In Markham, Ontario, the Royal Canadian Mint launches the Harmony 25c Millenium coin. The design was provided by Haver Demirer. [525.17]

  • In Thunder Bay, Ontario, the Royal Canadian Mint launches the Celebration 25c Millenium coin, designed by Laura Paxton. [525.17] [538.1]

  • In Toronto, the Royal Canadian Mint introduces a Millenium circulating $2 coin, entitled Path of Knowledge. It depicts a mother polar bear and two cubs, designed by Tony Bianco. [525.1] [538.18] [661.156]

  • In Squamish, BC, the Royal Canadian Mint launches the Family 25c Millenium coin, designed by Wade Stephen Baker. [536.1]

  • In Ottawa, the Canadian Numismatic Association holds its 50th anniversary convention. [524]

  • In Montreal, the Royal Canadian Mint releases the September 25c Millenium coin. [523.6]

  • The Royal Canadian Mint releases "The Adventures of Zachary and Penny Money kit", 1999 edition. It includes 12 stories based on each 1999 25c Millenium coin, plus games, a display card for the 12 coins, and a September 1999 25c coin. [532.31]
  • In Montreal, the Royal Canadian Mint unveils the September 25c Millenium coin, etitled Wisdom, designed by Cezar Serbanescu. [532.32]
  • The Royal Canadian Mint releases "The Adventures of Zac and Penny Money kit", 2000 edition. It includes 12 stories based on each 2000 25c Millenium coin, plus games, a display card for the 12 coins, and a Celebration 2000 25c coin. [532.31]
  • The Royal Canadian Mint announces the 1999 test token set, comprised of 1c, 5c, 10c, 25c, 50c coins made of a steel core plated with copper and nickel, plus a 50c size medallion celebrating the initiation of plated coinage at the Winnipeg facility. All coins have a "P" mark below the effigy of the Queen. Price is $99.95 per set; mintage is limited to 20,000 sets. [532]

  • In Toronto, the Royal Canadian Mint launches the Creativity 25c Millenium coin, designed by Erik Kong Tat Hui. [561.1]

  • Seyed Tehramiamin, a press operator at the Winnipeg Mint, sells fifteen 2000-dated Natural Legacy 25c coins struck on copper planchets to a Winnipeg coin dealer. He is later convicted of making and smuggling the coins from the mint. [662.1]
  • The Government amends the Royal Canadian Mint Act, allowing a 3-cent coin to be struck. [643.1]
November 1
  • The Royal Canadian Mint unveils the Freedom 25c coin, designed by Kathy Vinish. [644.1]

  • The Royal Canadian Mint reports that based on a study in April, there is no urgent need for a $5 coin, and that the 1c coin would remain in production. [645.1]
December 4
  • In Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, the Royal Canadian Mint lanuches the Community 25c coin, designed by Michelle Thibodeau. [646.26]

  • The Royal Canadian Mint issues about 2 million 5-cent nickel-plated steel coins, dated 2000. [647.29]

2001

February 19
  • A mint employee of the Winnipeg facility is charged with striking, stealing, and selling year 2000 Natural Legacy 25c coins on copper planchets. An estimated 20 were made. [650.1]
February 23
  • Canadian Coinoisseur conducts a coin auction at the TOREX convention in Toronto, Ontario, over 2 days. An 1885 10c NGC MS-65 sells for $28,000. A 1921 50c ICCS VG-8 sells for $19,000. [647.23] [651.29]
April 24
  • In Regina, Saskatchewan, the Prince of Wales unveils the design of a Canadian 10c coin commemorating the International Year of Volunteers. The coin is to be minted for general circulation. [653.29]
June 16
  • At the Torex show, Charles D. Moore conducts a coin auction. A 1921 50c in mint state sells for $83,000. A 1929 25c grading ICG SP-68 sells for $10,000. [647.13] [653.4] [657.1] [658.6]

  • In Toronto, the Canadian Coinoisseur company conducts the Torex Auction, over two days. Some highlights:
    • 5 cents 1921 ICCS VG-10: $2750;
    • 25 cents 1900 PCGS MS-65: $7150;
    • 50 cents 1900 PCGS MS-63: $29,700;
    • gold sovereign 1908c ICCS SP-65: $5060.
