  • The Royal Canadian Mint officially acknowledges that the schooner depicted on the 10c coin since 1937 is the Bluenose. The Mint and the Bluenose II Preservation Trust undertook comprehensive historical research to confirm the subject of the original design. [783.1]

  • In Vancouver, British Columbia, the Canadian Numismatic Association holds its annual convention, over three days. The Canadian Coinoisseur conducts the auction of the Douglas Mason Collection. Auction highlights:
    • 50 cents 1910 Victorian leaves ICCS MS-65: $75,000;
    • 50 cents 1921 ICG MS-65: $104,500.

  • The Royal Canadian Mint officially unveils the Susanna Blunt design of the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, for use on all new Canadian coins. [795.18]

  • The Royal Canadian Mint launches the second 2003 Uncirculated Set, with all coins featuring the new obverse portrait of Queen Elizabeth II created by Susanna Blunt. Mintage is limited to 75,000 sets. [794.12]

  • The Royal Canadian Mint and Canada Post release a special set of coins and stamps commemorating the 50th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Each set includes two 2002 commemorative stamps, two 2003 commemorative stamps, a 1953 1c coin, a 2003 1c coin, a 2002 commemorative 50c coin, and a 2003 50c coin. Mintage limit is set at 15,000 sets. Retail price is $22.95. [796.1]

  • At the Torex coin show in Toronto, Michael Walsh conducts the auction. A 1913 10-cent coin with broad leaves graded PCGS MS-64 and ICCS MS-63 sells for $39,100. [821.1] [825.1]
