  • The Royal Canadian Mint issues sets of six 2010 circulating coins in four new holders, with themes polar bear, canoe on lake, RCMP, and maple leaves. [1059.19]

  • Finance Minister Jim Flaherty announces circulating $1, $2 composition to be changed for 2011, to use multi-plated steel blanks. [1060.1] [1136.20] [1139.50]

  • Gatewest Coins and Proof Positive purchase a collection of about 200 Specimen Canadian coins for over $1 million. Some are unique, some finest graded. [1061.30]
April 14
  • The Royal Canadian Mint issues a 2010 Coin Collector Card - RCMP, including a set of six 1-cent through $2 circulating coins (excluding 50-cent coin). Issue price is $19.95. [1045] [1099.21] [1215.27]
June 25
  • A Canadian $1 million 100-kg gold Maple Leaf coin, the world's largest gold coin, sells at auction in Austria for 3.27 million euros (CDN$4.18 million), the melt value of the gold. [1029] [1035.52] [1065.17]
June 29
  • The Royal Canadian Mint releases a $1 coin to circulation commemorating the founding of the Canadian Navy in 1910. Queen Elizabeth II unveils the new coin in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The obverse design featuring a Halifax-class frigate with 1910 naval serviceman and modern naval officer was created by Bonnie Ross. [1035.50] [1065.1]

  • The Royal Canadian Mint releases the 2010 Saskatchewan Roughriders $1 100th anniversary commemorative coin to circulation. In place of the loon design is the team's logo with stylized "100". [1069.50] [1108.1] [1109.12]
October 28
  • The Royal Canadian Mint releases the 2010 colorized Red Poppy plated-steel 25-cent coin to circulation, for the 65th anniversary of the end of World War II. The design of two red poppies flanking a soldier was created by the mint's Master Engraver Cosme Saffioti. Weight 4.4 grams, diameter 23.88mm, mintage 11 million. [1077.46] [1210.1]
October 29
  • The Royal Canadian Mint and Canada Post begin sales of a 2010 Proof 0.925 fine silver $10 coin depicting a blue whale, designed by Pierre Leduc. Weight is 27.78 grams, diameter 40mm, mintage limit 10,000. The coin is available for $79.95 in a set with a $10 postage stamp of a whale. [1079.50] [1115.1]
December 14
  • The Canadian Senate Committee on National Finance releases a report recommending the Royal Canadian Mint cease production of the 1-cent coin and withdraw it from circulation. [1092.10] [1095.1]
December 29
  • Angus Reid releases results of a poll of 1016 Canadian adults indicating 55 percent are in favor of removing the cent coin from circulation. [1096.1]
