  • The Swedish Trade Union Confederation and the Swedish Employers Confederation accept a final contract offer from a government appointed mediator. Wages will increase by seven percent. [99.A3]

  • The 17th century warship Kronan is discovered by an archealogical team lead by Anders Franzén. The ship lies scattered in mud four miles east of Öland, where it sunk in 1676. [226.444]

  • Swedish armed forces abandon further searching for the foreign submarine in its coastal waters, resuming routine patrols. [326.A5]
December
  • The Royal Swedish Mint releases a 200 kronor coin to commemorate the 1980 Succession Law to the Swedish Throne. The 27-gram coin has a silver fineness of 0.925. Mintage is limited to 50,000. [41.1]

  • Prime Minister Thorbjörn Fälldin resigns, over a dispute within the coalition government on when and how to begin lowering income tax rates. [100.2] [218.45]

  • The Soviet submarine near Karlskrona is towed off the rocks, and the captain is interrogated aboard a Swedish vessel. [103.1]

  • Swedish Navy ships tow a Soviet submarine to outside Sweden's 12-mile limit. Soviet officials maintain that the sub strayed off course due to fog and navigational equipment failure.   • The Swedish Mint issues a 100-kr 0.925 fine silver coin, in honor of the International Year of the Forest. Mintage is limited to 120,000 pieces. [125.A16]
  • The Canadian government declares Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg to be an honorary Canadian citizen. [366.303]

  • Convicted spy Stig Bergling flees the country with his wife, while out of prison on a weekend pass. As a result, Minister of Justice Sten Wickman and other top officials are forced to resign. [188.9]

  • Shkkan Anderson donates 42 million kronor to the Swedish Royal Academy of Music, for use in awards. [52.14]
